Keep all thoughts in your heart equally and peacefully. As Saraha said: This mind bound by ropes, if released, there is no doubt it will be liberated. And: Keep the unprocessed awareness as it is. With an artificial mind, one cannot attain the noble path. As it is said, when awareness is kept in its unprocessed natural state, gross conceptualizations cease. The experience of clarity and emptiness arises. One remembers the kindness of the lama, feels happiness within oneself, and turns away from samsara. This is called stillness, where stillness is the cessation of afflictions, and abiding is abiding in its meaning. Samadhi is also the same, where stillness is immovability, and holding is not letting go. Also, the unborn Zhang said: Cutting off the elaborations of the three times is what should be done. Do not dwell on the past, do not dwell on the future, and do not dwell on the present. Let awareness relax and abide in its natural state, without artifice. If you do not understand relaxation, awareness will not settle, and wisdom will not arise. For example, a person imprisoned thinks only of escaping, but if not imprisoned, there is no thought of escaping. Similarly, if this awareness is held, it will scatter. If not held, it will not scatter, so awareness should be relaxed and left to rest. In the state of relaxation, that very moment, awareness is clear and uninterrupted, bright, comfortable, and spacious, inconceivable. In short, do not think about the previous thought, do not think about the next thought. What kind of conceptual thought is arising in oneself now? Like this, by staring intently at the present moment of thought, the flow of thoughts will be completely cut off. If you are not distracted, there will be no thoughts. Once distracted, thoughts will arise. By focusing intently on the thought that has arisen, the thought will dissolve on its own and become calm without further conceptualization. Thus, whatever thought arises, focus on it naturally and observe it intently. When clarity increases in a short period of time, interrupt it, and do it many times for short durations. Sit comfortably in the vajra posture, etc., and do not meditate on Mahamudra. Similarly, do not deliberately meditate on the unborn, free from elaboration, beyond mind, without characteristics, without objects, with objects, with characteristics, etc. So what should one do? Do not move the body, do not close the eyes,

Do not cut off the trace of past thoughts, do not welcome future thoughts. The key is to recognize this very moment of arising thought. In the very moment of staring intently at one's own thought, cause and effect are simultaneous, and phenomena are liberated in their own place; this is the nature of reality. By repeatedly looking at each thought that arises in this way, at some point, the thought will be clearly recognized and liberated in that very moment. That very moment when a thought is clearly recognized is called realizing Mahamudra, called the arising of Samadhi in the continuum, called the arising of meditation. Because in that very moment of recognizing the thought, it defeats and purifies all the accumulated sins from beginningless time. Just as a fool tends cattle, the yogi lets awareness go wherever it pleases. Abide like a dog without attachment to a corpse, abide like a leper without desire, like a Brahmin spinning thread, the yogi relaxes awareness and abides. Abide like a corpse without grasping, abide like a madman without memory, abide like unobstructed space, abide like a clear glass ball, abide like an uncorrected child, abide in a relaxed manner. This is the teaching on how to settle the mind. When abiding in this way, the state of mind abiding is that only awareness remains, or because nothing enters awareness, it abides still. When this happens, recognize that the mind has been caught. Before, one would think that one had simply fallen into delusion. Meditate on settling the mind in this way, first in short periods with many repetitions, then gradually lengthen the periods of meditation. Later, when accustomed, one can abide wherever one is. There is no difference in the four activities of walking, standing, sitting, and lying down. A sign of the mind abiding is that when an experience arises, as soon as awareness is directed towards it, it will subside. One will also be self-satisfied, feel happy, awareness is very comfortable, one does not want to do anything, one wants to meditate again and again, or one does not want to meditate, awareness is very clear, joy arises again and again, one wants to live in a solitary place, certainty arises about the instructions, respect arises again and again for the Lama, aversion arises for Samsara, one feels that one must meditate, otherwise it is of no benefit, one feels that one is about to die. To encounter such a Dharma is great merit.
