Ah! Secondly, the key point of mind is: do not trace back the past, do not welcome the future, and rest the present awareness in a clear and non-conceptual state. Because the past has stopped, vanished, and passed, it cannot be contemplated; the future has not yet arrived, has not yet been realized, and is not in any place, so even if you investigate it, there is no need. And the present, if examined and analyzed, the sequence of countless moments is so subtle that it cannot be examined, because it is not truly established, it transcends the realm of the mind, and is beyond thought and expression. Therefore, do not mix in any defilements of conceptual clinging such as is and is not, existence and non-existence, good and bad, but rest in the state of suchness in a way that cannot be rested, and rest in the state of clarity and emptiness without grasping. In fact, the meaning of the abiding nature of Mahamudra does not depend on whether or not the elaborations of the three times are cut off. However, for beginners, if the conceptual thoughts of the three times are not cut off when starting meditation, Samadhi will not arise in the continuum, so it is very important to guide in this way when receiving practical instructions. The twenty-second lecture, the twentieth object of focus. Therefore, when settling the mind, if you want to find a settler and try too hard, it will become a distraction, so at first just relax as if to enter Samadhi, and apart from that, in actual practice, do not generate the thought of wanting to meditate, or even the thought of "I am practicing preliminaries," but rather be blank, relaxed, and rest in the natural state of non-grasping. Make this state a habit, and in the four activities of walking, standing, sitting, and lying down, do not be distracted from the state of clarity and emptiness without grasping. First, try to maintain non-distraction for the duration of eating a mouthful of food, drinking a sip of tea, reciting one mala of Mani (six-syllable mantra: Om Mani Padme Hum), or standing up and taking two or three steps. After getting used to it, no matter what good or bad circumstances arise, no matter in large or small groups, learn to abide in the non-distracted state of clarity and emptiness without grasping. The meaning of these is also stated by Gampopa: Do not trace back the past, do not welcome the future, and let the present awareness rest in its own natural state. The so-called not tracing back the past means that our mind does not follow the previous conceptual thoughts; the so-called not welcoming the future means that our mind does not welcome the subsequent conceptual thoughts.

Yes. Now, to settle the present awareness in its natural state means not clinging to anything in the present moment. If the mind is not fabricated, it will be clear; if the water is not muddy, it will be clear. Therefore, naturally settle in the unfabricated state. When you settle in that way, there will be clarity and non-thought, a state of emptiness, relaxation, slight trembling, etc., or only a brief period of time. Do not consider a long time to be an advantage or a short time to be a disadvantage, but practice. After that, when a thought arises, relax and settle. The nature of mind bound by ropes, if released, there is no doubt that it will be liberated, so release it. By releasing and practicing in that way, the state of clarity and non-thought becomes longer and longer, and eventually it will merge into your own nature. This is what is called the continuous meditation of a river. Furthermore, the intention of Dombi Heruka, Dagpo Rinpoche said: Just as water is clear when it is not muddy, settle without fabrication. Just as the sun is not obscured by clouds, do not negate the six consciousnesses, settle in your own nature. In all times and actions, settle without distraction. Furthermore, Je Gotsangpa said: Relax and settle in emptiness, let go of all clinging. It means that the mind cannot be found by searching, cannot be seen by looking, cannot be established by analyzing, cannot be grasped by holding, will not disappear by letting go, will not stay by settling, will not be mixed by mixing, cannot be separated by dividing, cannot be split by splitting, cannot be understood by looking, cannot be comprehended by speaking, cannot be described by any metaphor, cannot be reached by anything, and there is no contradiction in whatever name is given to it. So how to practice it? Do not deliberately scatter, do not deliberately gather, do not place in equanimity. Do not let thoughts develop on their own, do not follow feelings, do not add the impurities of reason. Do not regard the external empty realm as real, do not regard the internal selfless emptiness as nihilistic. Do not regard the arising of thoughts as a fault, do not fall into the bias of clinging to appearance and clinging to emptiness. Do not recall the past, do not welcome the future, do not regard the present as real, but let awareness naturally relax, effortlessly, without clinging, without relying, without birth or death, empty, unobstructed, clear. There is nothing left outside.
