If this happens, meditation will definitely arise, and if this preliminary practice does not grasp the essence of meditation, realization will not arise, so it is very important to prolong the practice. For those who have experience in practice, introducing them to the preliminary practice itself will lead to the arising of calm abiding. At this time, the lama should examine the disciple's experience. This, although called preliminary practice, is actually the main practice, so whether or not meditation arises depends on this. If this does not become the key, rushing into the main practice will result in something bad, so for these preliminary practices, it is necessary to gain stability and certainty, and to prolong the practice until signs appear, and then gradually enter the main practice. Fifteenth teaching session, fourteenth object of focus. Third, the four special preliminary practices are: the causal condition, the condition of ownership, the condition of the object, and the immediately preceding condition. First, at the time of the cause, one needs to be free from clinging to reality and without attachment to anything, a renunciate who has turned away from worldly concerns. Therefore, through the power of the previously taught common preliminary practices, one knows that this precious human body with leisure and opportunity is difficult to obtain. By meditating on impermanence, one knows that this life is impermanent like a dewdrop on a blade of grass, not exhausted by anything, quickly decaying, and one does not know when one will die. At the time of death, nothing but the Dharma will help, and one thinks that this life's wealth, enjoyment, conquering enemies, and caring for relatives are unnecessary, and without a moment's懈怠, one strives only for the sake of future lives, thereby taming one's mind, correctly recognizing the characteristics of samsaric phenomena, feeling weary and disillusioned, and with the thought of wanting to attain liberation, one has not even a hair's breadth of attachment to this life, let alone worldly affairs. Abandoning all listening, contemplation, analysis, explanation, oral instructions, recitation, etc., that are not in accordance with the Dharma, one should abide in a very secluded place, cutting off all internal and external distractions, in a manner of completely abandoning all activities. The necessity of this is that Mahamudra is the direct pointing to the nature of the mind, and if the mind follows distractions and wandering thoughts, samadhi will not arise, so one should practice in a secluded place. Sixteenth teaching session, fifteenth object of focus. Second, the path to realizing Mahamudra depends entirely on the lama.

One needs to be guided by a virtuous friend. Among them, there are the lineage guru, the Sugata's teachings guru, the appearance sign guru, and the ultimate Dharma-nature guru. First, from Vajradhara to one's own root guru, the oral instructions and practice traditions that have been passed down have not deteriorated, and they are able to generate special experiences of realization in the disciple's mindstream, and are able to open the door of wisdom for others just as they have realized the view themselves, and regard conceptual thoughts as the source of kindness, and transform all appearances into the companions of wisdom and cultivate them, and even transform unfavorable adverse conditions into favorable conditions and virtues. All delusions arise from not recognizing the true nature of conceptual thoughts, and recognizing that conceptual thought is the mind, thereby transforming conceptual thought into the path, which is without delusion. Knowing conceptual thought in this way, one can understand all dharmas without obstruction, like brandishing a spear in the sky, which is the ability to open the door of wisdom. Therefore, one should seek and rely on virtuous friends who possess these qualities, and treat them with single-minded faith and reverence. This is in accordance with what Naropa said, "The characteristic of a guru is to have a lineage." Secondly, by obtaining the introduction of the guru, one gains certainty in one's own mind inwardly, and is filled with reverence for the words of the Buddhas. By carefully observing and analyzing, one examines whether the practice of the oral instructions is in accordance with the Dharma or not. Through examination, one can generate experiences that do not contradict the oral instructions of both the Mahayana and Hinayana, thereby causing the scriptures to appear as oral instructions, and this can be called a guru. If one does not possess such key points, but only clings to the one-sided words and letters of the Mahayana and Hinayana schools, and makes arbitrary judgments about right and wrong, truth and falsehood, this is impure and should be abandoned. This is the correct method of relying on the Sugata's teachings guru. Thirdly, taking unchanging faith as the basis for generating all qualities, and using examples such as the Dharmadhatu to demonstrate, therefore earth is a virtuous friend. Demonstrating with uninterrupted diligence or with the water of compassion to moisten the mindstream, therefore water is a virtuous friend. Demonstrating with the fire of wisdom burning the firewood of afflictions, and with the flames of wisdom dispelling the darkness of ignorance, therefore fire is a virtuous friend. With the power of the wind of experiential realization destroying the objects of obscuration, etc.
