Guard what arises without distraction. For example, like a skilled shepherd guarding livestock. Just as the livestock can roam freely without needing to be gathered, as long as they are within sight. There is no need to block or suppress whatever arises from thoughts and the appearances of the six consciousnesses. Establish the awareness of self-knowing as a support, and without clinging to whatever arises, guard it loosely. That is, rely on the clear awareness of non-distraction in the four activities of walking, standing, sitting, and lying down, continuously practicing. Although distraction may be greater at first, gradually, awareness will naturally increase, and most thoughts and appearances will appear clearly and brightly. In any case, in the state of Samatha-Vipassana (Shamatha and Vipassana combined), allow any thoughts and appearances to arise, observe their essence, analyze them, and then guard them as described above. What will happen if you strive to practice Samatha and post-Samatha in this way? Everything will be pervaded by the awareness of self-knowing, and no matter how thoughts and appearances arise, just at the moment of arising and appearing, they will appear clearly and empty, without any clinging. In Samatha, guarding its essence single-mindedly, and in post-Samatha, guarding thoughts and appearances with awareness, the essence of these two will become indistinguishable. Various experiences of bliss, clarity, and non-conceptuality, both strong and weak, will also arise. If accompanied by experiences, it will obscure the true nature, so you must stimulate strong awareness, exert all your strength, and again and again separate consciousness from the moisture of experience, and practice pure awareness. The third is to cut off obstacles, places of loss, and deviations: For those who have little learning and have relied on the lama for a short time, there is a great risk of loss and deviation due to understanding and experience. Among them, there are said to be four kinds of loss in emptiness, that is, loss in the nature of knowable things. Not understanding the key point that meditation appearances are inseparable from emptiness, possessing all supreme qualities, thinking that emptiness is an emptiness that does not require any merit or fault, and is not truly existent, thereby distinguishing between good and evil, this is "inverted loss." Although understanding the essential meaning of meditation and knowing how to explain it, it is not confirmed in one's own experience, this is "temporary loss." Loss on the path, that is, not understanding that meditation is inseparable from the path and the fruit, that the fruit exists in one's own nature, but taking meditation as the path, hoping to obtain other fruits, this is "fundamental loss." Although meditation truly exists in oneself, one is not satisfied with it, hoping for something better, thereby seeking it externally, or adding more content to meditation itself to meditate, these are "temporary losses." As an antidote,

The loss lies in, during meditation, not distinguishing between what is to be abandoned and the antidote, but with self-awareness and self-knowledge, considering the very thing to be abandoned as the antidote, this is a loss of ignorance, separating the afflictions to be abandoned from meditation, and using meditation as an antidote to the afflictions, is the initial loss; when thoughts scatter or when encountering other conditions, immediately stopping and switching to meditation, this is the temporary loss. The loss in proliferation lies in, not understanding the method of meditation, not distinguishing, all phenomena abiding in their own nature, this is a proliferation of ignorance, clinging to appearances, yet thinking that self-nature is not established, is the initial loss; not integrating meditation into the path, but only doing superficial work, yet thinking that one is meditating, or first listening, and then wanting to meditate, like this, cutting off meditation with thoughts, is the temporary loss. All of the above can be considered as losses in meditation. Some losses can lead to falling into the lower realms, and others can turn meditators into people without experience and shameless, therefore it is very important not to lose. The wrong path lies in, generally speaking, through meditation, countless differences in the experience of bliss, clarity, and non-thought will arise. In particular, if the practitioner's channels, drops, and winds are good, and are not interrupted by distraction and laziness, and continue to meditate, then various amazing and indescribable experiences will arise. If meditation is mixed with other affairs, then only a few experiences will arise. In any case, in the experience of bliss, the body will be filled with happiness, the touch of hot and cold will also appear as happiness, and even the existence or non-existence of the body will not be felt, feeling happy and excited, etc., the heart will be filled with joy, a feeling of happiness will arise, the heart will feel comfortable and relaxed, and even day and night will not be distinguished, various kinds of happiness will arise. In the experience of clarity, the mind will become clear, all appearances will become clear, even at night all objects near and far can be seen, appearances of light and clarity will appear, and even one will feel that one can understand the thoughts of others, etc., various kinds of experiences will arise. In the experience of non-thought, various signs of emptiness will appear, and an attachment to emptiness will arise for all things. Appearances will become dim and without self-nature, oneself and appearances will appear as emptiness, a definite understanding of emptiness will arise, etc., various kinds of experiences will arise. Whether it is any one of the three experiences of bliss, clarity, and non-thought, or just one of these experiences, it is the same. If these experiences are considered supreme, and one clings to these experiences, and deliberately meditates in order to generate these experiences, then happiness will
