of the mind. It thoroughly arises as meaningful things. Like this, Master Nagarjuna said in the "Praise of Dharmadhatu": Mind-essence is seen as two kinds, namely, worldly and transworldly. From clinging to self arises samsara, recognizing this separately is nirvana. With the exhaustion of desire, there is nirvana; with the exhaustion of hatred and delusion, and the cessation of these, is Buddhahood itself, the refuge of all beings. Like this it is said. In the "Explanation of Mind," it says: With the nature of the grasped and the grasper, it is different from consciousness; there is nothing at all of external objects. Like this. Danu Zhaba said: The single mind is the seed of all things, from which arise samsara and nirvana, giving the desired fruit; I prostrate to the mind like a wish-fulfilling jewel. Like this it is said, and so on, endlessly. Second, establishing that the mind is without inherent existence. In the "Bodhi Mind Explanation," it says: Abiding in the Mind-Only, even great fortunate ones should abandon it. To those who speak of consciousness, these various things are established as mind. What is the nature of consciousness? Now that itself should be explained. Whatever the Subduer taught as "all these are Mind-Only," it is for the sake of dispelling the fear of children, not that itself. The completely imputed and the dependent, and the thoroughly established, these are the single nature of emptiness, imputed upon the mind. For those with the nature of great vehicle joy, the selflessness of phenomena is equality. The mind is unborn from the beginning, the Buddha spoke concisely. Like this. In the "Ornament of the Sutras," it says: Having known with intelligence that there is nothing other than mind, then one realizes that mind itself is also non-existent. Having known with intelligence that both do not exist, that non-existence abides in the realm of phenomena. As it is said, although knowing that all phenomena of samsara and nirvana are mind, if one does not realize that mind itself is without basis, without root, and the emptiness that transcends all extremes, one cannot completely sever the clinging to the self of phenomena, therefore it is necessary to know the nature of mind. There are two aspects to this: abandoning the extreme of existence and non-existence, and abandoning the extreme of is and is not. First: It is not existent, even the Victorious Ones have not seen it; it is not non-existent, it is the basis of all samsara and nirvana; it is not contradictory, it is the path of union, the Middle Way; it is the mind free from extremes.

May I realize the nature of reality! Thus it is taught. The meaning of its first line is: Well, is the pure mind previously mentioned necessarily truly established as existent? Not to mention being truly established as existent, it does not exist in terms of either truth or falsehood, because even the wisdom of all the Buddhas who see everything has not seen it. As it says in the *Heap of Jewels Sutra*: "The mere absence of mind is also not existent; there is neither measure nor measurement." And in the *Akshobhya Sutra*: "Akshobhya, the mind is not in the inside, nor is it in the outside, nor is it perceived between the two. Akshobhya, the mind is unexaminable, unshowable, unsupportable, unmanifest, undiscriminating, and unlocalized. Akshobhya, the mind is unseen, is not seen, and will not be seen even by all the Buddhas." And as it says in the *Mother Sutra*: "Mind is no-mind; the nature of mind is luminosity." And as it says in the *Tantra of Manifest Enlightenment of Vairocana*: "Lord of Secrets, the mind is unseen, is not seen, and will not be seen by the Tathagatas." How should one fully know one's own mind? It is like this: whether in form, or color, or shape, or place, or object, or feeling, or concept, or formation, or consciousness, or self, or what belongs to self, or what is grasped, or what grasps, or purity, or impurity, or element, or source, even if one searches completely among all forms, it cannot be found. Lord of Secrets, this is the Bodhicitta of the Bodhisattva, called the door of the pure mind of enlightenment, the door of the appearance of phenomena, the first way of the appearance of phenomena. And so on, because it is extensively taught. Therefore, what the Buddhas said about seeing the nature of reality as it is, and what they said about the mind being self-knowing and self-illuminating, all refer to the fact that the nature of reality is free from all extremes of elaboration, and that even a particle is not seen, which is called the great vision of wisdom, and that it is necessary to know the key secret of calling knowledge and clarity what is free from the knowable and the knower, the illuminable and the illuminator, and it should not be compared to the seeing and hearing of worldly people. Otherwise, self-knowing, etc., would also be contradictory, as it says in the *Lankavatara Sutra*: "Just as a sword cannot cut itself, just as a finger"
