Therefore, that which takes it as its object is called mind (yi). Consciousness has the nature of self-grasping and is always accompanied by the four afflictions. As it is said, it is extensively explained in the Compendium of Vehicles (Thegpa bsdus) and others, and one should consult them in detail. Thus, due to the power of the mind arising from the all-ground consciousness (kun gzhi), the six objects that are apprehended externally and the six consciousnesses internally appear as if they are established as distinct entities, even though they are not. This is also due to the interdependent arising of the aggregation of object, faculty, and consciousness. From that, appearance arises and then becomes associated with the conceptual mind. Because it is seen in the ultimate sense, it is established as appearance, arising, and attainment. Thus, that appearance is also due to the interdependence of the power of the seeds of object, faculty, and consciousness, which are continuously present in the all-ground consciousness. The Vajra Peak (rdo rje rtse mo) says: "The all-ground consciousness, which possesses all seeds, is considered to be the nature of outer and inner." The order of appearance is also: the mind, impelled by the mental factor of formation (samskara), cognizes the six objects, and from that arises the consciousness that sees them as real. When that arises, feelings of pleasure, which are thought to be desirable, and feelings of suffering, which are thought to be undesirable, and feelings of equanimity, which are neither of the two, arise. When that arises, perception (samjna) arises, which grasps the characteristics of the object. When that arises, one should know that the imprints of speculating on other objects and the clinging to the formation of the form aggregate are established. Thus, these phenomena that appear from the self-power of mind itself have never existed in the nature of mind, nor is it possible for them to exist. However, because this is not realized, mind itself grasps itself as an object, and thus delusion arises. Due to the power of that which is generated by ignorance, because self-awareness is not realized as being without basis or root, one is deluded into thinking that the one who grasps the object is the self. Therefore, all the phenomena of the five aggregates—form, feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness—are solely delusion, and the basis of delusion is mind. Therefore, not even an atom exists separately from mind. Just as emptiness appears as horses and cattle through the application of mantra, but the horses and cattle do not exist separately from emptiness. So, when does the mind become immersed in delusion? Because the appearance of time is also imputed by delusion, it is not established at all, and cannot be pointed to as "this." However, it is beginningless.

When one has (ignorance), one begins to be deluded from the very state of ignorance. That is, the essence of the pure mind, emptiness, is called Alaya-vijñana, its self-nature luminosity is called Manas, and its aspect of non-cessation is called Vijnana, because it appears inverted due to reliance on ignorance. The sources for these statements are extensively found in the later turning of the wheel sutras such as the Lankavatara Sutra and the Ratnakuta Sutra and their commentaries, but I will not elaborate here. Does this way of delusion also appear in the tantras and commentaries of mantra? Although there are some differences due to intention and necessity, the root of the meaning is the same. As stated in the Hevajra Tantra: "From me all beings arise, from me the three places also arise, I pervade all this, I do not see the self-nature of beings other than myself." And in the Great Commentary on the Kalachakra Tantra: "The great unchanging desire is wisdom, and ignorance here is the beginningless habitual tendencies of desire of sentient beings." And so on. The so-called demon is the defilement of the habitual tendencies of the minds of sentient beings in samsara. The so-called Buddha is the mind that is free from the habitual tendencies of samsara. And so on. In the Commentary on the Mind, it says: "Conventional afflictions arise from karma, karma arises from the mind, and the mind is accumulated by habitual tendencies." And so on. Secondly, the way in which it revolves in samsara is: Although the object and the subject are not different, the delusion of grasping at duality appears continuously until the Alaya-vijñana is transformed. Therefore, in this space of existence, it revolves and wanders like a water wheel. Also, from the Alaya-vijñana arises the mind (manas), and from the mind arise the six consciousnesses, and thus the habitual tendencies of experiencing objects. Again, the mind acts on the Alaya-vijñana, etc., and since the interdependent origination that appears as mutual causes and conditions is continuous until Buddhahood is attained, the Alaya-vijñana, which is the continuous stream of habitual tendencies flowing like a river, will not be cut off. It is said: "It is like a constantly flowing river, but the Arhat can cut it off." And in the Lankavatara Sutra it says: "The nature of the mind is pure."
