Lethargy and drowsiness, agitation and doubt, are obscured by the five obscurations. Thus, and so on, in the sutras, tantras, and treatises, there are many instances of saying that the purity of mind is the mind itself. Secondly, that it is the union of clarity and emptiness is stated in the Guhyasamaja Tantra: "Free from all things, aggregates, elements, and sources, abandoning the grasped and the grasper, all phenomena are without self, of equal nature. Since the mind itself is unborn from the beginning, it is the nature of emptiness." Thus, it is declared that the essence is emptiness. The Uttaratantra states: "The nature of the mind is luminosity; it is immutable like the sky. Attachment and so forth arise from false thoughts, but it is not defiled by adventitious stains." Thus, it is shown that because its nature is luminosity, it cannot be obscured by adventitious stains, and so on. There are countless scriptures that establish the mind as clarity and emptiness. However, these two, clarity and emptiness, are not separate emptiness apart from clarity, nor separate clarity apart from emptiness. Therefore, they are united, having the characteristic of being without distinction. This is what the Protector Maitreya declared. If such a key secret is not understood, then here in Tibet, those who are logicians, who speak of the union of a clear clear thing and an empty empty thing as if they were walking together, have turned away from the teachings of the Sugata. The meaning of the second line is that the path of the Great Seal Vajra Yoga, which purifies the stains to be purified on the basis of what is to be cultivated, is as it appears in the teaching lineages of the Dagpo Kagyu. A qualified student relies on a qualified lama, and according to the order of capacity, whether or not the empowerment with elaboration has preceded it, the three preliminaries of common, uncommon, and special, and the two main practices of calm abiding and insight yoga are practiced. Then, through introduction, one ascertains the special realization of seeing the face of ordinary consciousness, and relying on the two stages of yoga, which are the same in meaning, one realizes it. According to the capacity of the student and the ability of the teacher, some realize it only through the blessing of the transference of wisdom, and some in stages.
