Since the teacher is the Buddha, the Buddha is called the teacher. Since what he teaches is to be put into practice, the Dharma is called the path. Like a crossroads without a guide, one must follow the instructions and practices of the noble ones, so the Sangha is called a companion. When the path reaches its end, there is no longer a need for Dharma and Sangha, because one's mind becomes one with the Buddhas, so the ultimate refuge is only the Buddha. In these sectarian contexts, there are many discussions about how to identify and whether or not something is a refuge, but for those who only practice and leave good imprints, those things are not needed; just purify your mind stream with faith. As a temporary object of faith, the Sutras say to place an image or stupa of the Buddha in front. From this, it follows that one should also visualize the books of the sacred Dharma Sutras and Vinaya, as well as the ordinary Sangha who possess discipline, as the actual deity, and take refuge and have faith. If one goes for refuge to the Lesser Vehicle or the worldly, it will not become a pure refuge, nor will it produce complete benefits. Therefore, all sentient beings equal to the extent of space, from this time until the attainment of enlightenment, the thought of taking refuge is very important. This becomes the refuge of the Great Vehicle. Like the Sutra of Recollecting the Qualities of the Jewels, by understanding, one knows the qualities of the Jewels, and knows that the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha are superior to external teachers, wrong paths, and heretical practitioners. Because one understands these reasons, one promises from the depths of one's heart to always take refuge, and even if faced with danger to life, one does not seek refuge other than the Three Jewels. It is said that possessing these four characteristics becomes a pure refuge. Taking refuge cannot be just repetition and words; one must have faith in the Jewels from the depths of one's heart. If one has faith, it is impossible that the compassion of the Jewels does not have the power to protect. For the negative karma that must ripen in this life, although it may seem that the compassion of the Jewels is weak, if one has faith, they will surely protect in future lives. As soon as a little unpleasant thing happens, one says that the Jewels have no compassion, or one completely relies on divination, witchcraft, and medicine, etc.

These are all signs of lacking wisdom. Sometimes, not receiving the blessings of the deity is also due to the fault of one's own prayers not reaching. It is impossible for the deity not to have blessings. Therefore, always remember the qualities of the Three Jewels, cultivate faith, and diligently pray. Do not accumulate sins through idle talk and curses. For all supports of body, speech, and mind, and for all yellow robes worn, pay homage, make offerings, and have faith with the perception of them as the actual deity. Repair old supports of the Three Jewels, and build new ones. Do not place them on bare ground or in difficult places. Even thinking of selling the Buddha image for food or mortgaging it is not allowed. Do not carelessly step over even a fragment of a tsa-tsa or a single letter. Remembering kindness, perform respectful actions such as prostrations, offerings, and praises with the three doors of body, speech, and mind. Remembering compassion, guide other beings to take refuge and proclaim the great qualities of the Three Jewels. Remembering benefits, practice taking refuge six times day and night. Remembering faults, do not abandon the refuge even if faced with life-threatening danger. Remembering faith, no matter what happiness or suffering, rise or fall, is encountered, trust in the deity again and do not be discouraged. In short, having taken refuge in the Buddha, do not worship other worldly gods. Having taken refuge in the Dharma, abandon thoughts and actions that harm sentient beings. Having taken refuge in the Sangha, do not associate with non-Buddhists or those similar to them. If one can obtain a qualified guru, then the refuge also includes most of the stages of the path of Sutra and Tantra. If one does not have the practice of refuge and only speaks loudly and emptily, it is a great cliff of straying from the path. Therefore, if one can always remain inseparable from the practice of refuge, one will be included in the ranks of Buddhists. Small sins will be purified, and great sins will be lessened and weakened. One will not be hindered by obstacles from humans and non-humans. All roots of virtue such as vows and recitations will increase more and more. If one has pure faith in the deity, one will not go to the lower realms even if driven there. The White Lotus Sutra says: Those lay practitioners who have entered my teachings, or those who pretend to be renunciates, will all completely enter into the realm of non-remaining Nirvana in this very fortunate eon, and not one will be left behind.
