The Lamp of Definitive Meaning, a Concise Guide to the Four Preparations and the Actual Practice of Mahamudra. Mahamudra Preliminary Four Unions and the Actual Teaching System, Concise Lamp of Definitive Meaning. This is the treatise called Mahamudra Preliminary Four Unions and the Actual Teaching System, Concise Lamp of Definitive Meaning. Marpa, Mila, and Dakpo, the common ancestors of a hundred accomplished ones, And the Kagyu lineage of the glorious all-knowing one of the three times, The Vajra Holder who holds the rosary of wish-fulfilling jewels, I bow with my head to the lord of the lotus sun. Supreme perfect Buddha, May you take care of me and all sentient beings in all our lives, And bless us to realize the true nature. Furthermore, we have obtained a human body, Understood the meaning of entering the door of Dharma, and the mind must go to Dharma. In order to make the mind go to Dharma, one must know the qualities of the Three Jewels and have faith and trust. If one does not remember death and impermanence, one cannot take root, so the reason for meditating on impermanence first is this. Impermanence also arises from knowing that leisure and fortune are difficult to obtain, which is the root of the four common preliminaries. The fir༷st༷ or first meditation༷ is༷: Not being born in the eight states of no leisure, the human body with eight leisures༷ and ten endowments༷ is more precious than a wish-fulfilling jew༷el༷, thinking about the reasons why it is difficult to obtain this. That is, experiencing the suffering of heat and cold without any interruption, the hells༷. The pretas who are tormented only by the suffering of hunger and thirst. Animals who are foolish and ignorant and do not understand anything. The place where the Dharma flourishes is small. The places where the Dharma does not flourish are very many, so being born in those remote places and not hearing the sound of the Dharma, the barbarians༷. Being distracted by attachment to desirable qualities and samadhi, the long-lived gods of the desire realm, the form realm, and the formless realm, who have no appearance of Dharma. Those who do not believe in non-Buddhists and who are naturally displeased with the Dharma, the holders of wrong views. The dark age when the Buddha did not appear, the names of the Three Jewels were not proclaimed, and the world was empty. And the dumb, that is, the fools in the Kham dialect, the fools who do not want to turn their minds to the Dharma. These people have no opportunity to practice the Dharma and are tormented by their own karma, so they have no leisure.

Alas! Because one's own mind stream is not bound by the eight states of unfreedom, one possesses the eight freedoms. Even if one obtains a body capable of practicing Dharma, if one wishes to practice pure Dharma, it is necessary that one is not defiled by the sixteen states of unfreedom. These include: the five poisons being very coarse and disturbing one's mind stream; being controlled by sinful friends; having reversed views and conduct; being very lazy; negative karma from the past awakening and causing obstacles to arise like a flood; becoming like a slave or servant under the control of others; being afraid of mere food and clothing or death, entering the Dharma but engaging in non-Dharma activities; pretending to practice Dharma for the sake of gain, respect, and fame—these are the eight states of unfreedom due to immediate circumstances. Furthermore, being very attached to body, possessions, etc.; having a very rough personality leading to bad behavior; not being afraid no matter how much the suffering of samsara and the lower realms is explained; not believing no matter how much the benefits of liberation are explained; naturally delighting in non-virtue; not caring about Dharma like giving grass to a dog; the root of bodhicitta and vows being degenerated; the samaya with the guru and Dharma friends being broken—these are the eight states of unfreedom due to mental distraction. These sixteen factors also prevent Dharma from arising in one's mind stream and become the root of falling into the lower realms. Therefore, one should rejoice that one's mind stream was not previously defiled and learn the methods to prevent future defilement. One has obtained the precious human body free from the eight states of unfreedom, and due to the power of Dharma, one is born in a central region where Dharma flourishes. One possesses the five senses such as eyes, etc., so one can learn anything. One has not encountered wrong views and has entered the gate of the Buddha's teachings, so one will not go astray. One has faith in the Three Jewels, which are the five personal endowments. Although many worlds form and dissolve, it is rare for even one Buddha to appear, but now Shakyamuni Buddha has appeared. Even if solitary realizers and others appear, they do not teach the Dharma, but now this Victorious One has taught the profound and vast sacred Dharma. The previous teachings have also not disappeared, and many follow those teachings. Other sentient beings have renunciation due to old age, etc., and they lovingly give food, clothing, and necessities to practitioners, so one is not impoverished due to a Dharma-compatible livelihood, which are the five other endowments, totaling ten endowments. All sentient beings naturally engage in sinful deeds.
