Now, death is getting closer and closer with each passing day and month, what should we do? We should contemplate what is best. Think about the deaths of others a lot. This means that among those who are older, younger, or the same age as oneself, one should remember the many people who have died from now until the present. Someone like this in this place has also died, and someone like that in that place has also become like that. Only a few die of old age. Most of them die suddenly, hastily, happily, or pleasantly without time to think or remember. Some who have not died, the noble become lowly, the lowly become noble, beggars become rich, the rich become beggars, etc. Whatever one sees or hears, it does not go beyond the realm of impermanence, so will such a thing happen to me as well? Now, if there is still a little time, think that one should not fail to strive in the sacred Dharma. Think again and again about the many causes of death. This means that there are very many causes of death such as cliffs, hail, lightning, eclipses, offending evil spirits, etc., and one does not know what will happen. One does not know when it will happen. If there is karma, there is no way to prevent it from happening. Food, wealth, clothes, friends, relatives, servants, etc., one does not know how they will become the cause of one's death. Because one does not know when one will die, one should contemplate strongly what one will become now. In the Vinaya of the Bodhisattvas, it is said that there are nine causes of sudden death, namely: eating unsuitable food, eating too much even when full, eating the next meal before the previous one has been digested, not excreting urine and feces in time, patients not listening to doctors and nurses, being afflicted by powerful spirits, taking wrong emetics, engaging in violent activities without examination, and engaging in sexual activity without caution. One should also be cautious about these. Contemplate what will happen at the time of death. This means that death is not something that one wants to happen, but something that one does not want to happen but does happen. For sinful people and those who have created bad karma, there will be immeasurable suffering at the time of death, and in particular, the feeling of being cut off from life is very terrible. Many false illusions will arise. Both body and mind will not be under one's control, and whatever one thinks in one's mind cannot be controlled. Even if a small evil thought arises, because the mind at the time of death is powerful, one will surely fall into the lower realms, and this also depends on one's present habits, so one must now become accustomed to the Dharma. Needless to say, divination, rituals, medicine, ceremonies, food, wealth, etc., cannot avert death. Even the power of the Buddha cannot reverse the exhaustion of life.

Therefore, although there is no way to avoid death, one must ensure that there is no regret at that time. Think about what will happen after death. After death, even a universal monarch cannot take away a single bite of food, a single garment, or a single piece of wealth. Not even the lowliest servant can be taken along. The corpse is wrapped in clothes and tied with ropes. Everyone looks at it with disgust. After a few days, not even a trace remains. The mind is uncontrollable, wandering like a feather carried by the wind on the terrifying path of the bardo (intermediate state). Aimlessly wandering in a completely unfamiliar world. Following the footsteps of good and bad karma. There is no way to undo the sins that have already been committed. Even though the holy Dharma and virtuous deeds are beneficial, if one does not strive to practice now, there will be no one to lend or give help at that time. In short, there is no way not to practice the Dharma now, and the Dharma cannot be left unattended; it must be integrated into one's own mindstream. To integrate it into one's mindstream, one must meditate. Moreover, one must attain a stable state so that one can feel at ease at the time of death, and others will say, "This is a pure practitioner," and make one an object of veneration and offering. Someone has died, alas. Everyone is chanting "Lama Khyen." Do not fail to realize that such things are rapidly approaching oneself. Even though one knows that one will die someday, one always feels that one will not die for the time being. Even though one knows when one will die, because one has not attained a stable state, when encountering misfortune, one is deluded by worldly appearances and engages in actions that contradict the Dharma. These people are truly meaningless. Previously, more than half of one's life has been wasted. Now, the Lord of Death is already at the doorstep, so do not think about food, wealth, clothing, fame, etc., and place one's body, speech, and mind on the path of the Dharma. For those who live leisurely, or postpone things to later, what are they thinking in their hearts? One must never be separated from the foolishness of thinking that one is not afraid of death, even just a little bit. Third, the law of karma is the root of all the infinite collections of Dharma spoken by the Buddhas. It is extremely profound and vast. Only by realizing its single taste can one slightly understand the law of karma; otherwise, ordinary people cannot truly understand it. A virtuous cause produces a happy result, and a non-virtuous cause produces a suffering result.
