Therefore, these should also be accomplished incidentally: Abstaining from harming others leads to longevity; offering lamps and giving clothes, etc., leads to good looks; respecting teachers and Dharma friends without arrogance leads to noble birth; giving whatever is desired to those who are virtuous, sick, poor, and suffering leads to wealth and power; speaking only virtuous words leads to dignified speech; worshipping the Three Jewels and parents, etc., and making good prayers leads to great influence; delighting in men and protecting them from castration leads to obtaining a male body; helping with Dharma-abiding activities without expecting anything in return leads to perfect strength—learn the causes of these. Therefore, if you do not desire samsara, you must learn to abandon the causes of it, which are non-virtuous actions. Therefore, you must cultivate without hypocrisy the virtuous actions that are in accordance with merit, such as those mentioned here, and the virtuous actions that are in accordance with liberation, such as vows and commitments, and do not deceive yourself. The primary cause for attaining liberation is that one must have pure ethics sustained by a firm mind of renunciation from samsara. Based on that, single-pointed concentration arises. Through that, with the wisdom that realizes selflessness, one knows the general and specific characteristics of impermanence, suffering, emptiness, etc., and thus purifies previously accumulated obscurations, making it impossible for them to produce results in the future. In this way, the suffering of samsara ceases, and abiding in the state of non-dual awareness is what is called liberation. Other than that, there is no going somewhere else or transforming into something different to attain liberation or nirvana. In short, the result of virtuous actions is only happiness, and the result of non-virtuous actions is only suffering, and there is no possibility of confusing the two, just like planting seeds of barley and wheat. Actions with a white intention but a black deed, such as killing beings to offer to the Three Jewels, or hoping to help relatives but beating and scolding them. Actions with a black intention but a white deed, such as building a stupa for fame, studying for competition, or pretending to be virtuous out of fear of shame, all of these belong to non-virtue and should be abandoned like poison. What need is there to mention those that are obviously non-virtuous? If you do not counteract boasting of virtue, regret, and confessing sins with antidotes, etc.

In short, the karma one creates ripens only for oneself and not for others; even after countless eons, it will not be lost or wasted. This is because, in the stage of cause, karma may be small, but karma increases and changes. For example, killing with strong hatred, or saving a life that is certain to die with pure altruism, the extent of change in such great karma is immeasurable. Even small good or bad deeds done casually will increase hundreds and thousands of times. If it is not done by one's own thoughts and actions, the karma created by others will not affect oneself. Therefore, if one can accept and reject the cause and effect taught by the Buddha, then no matter how evil others are, there is absolutely no possibility of falling into the three lower realms. Therefore, in all circumstances, one should examine only one's own faults and expand the pure perception of others, which is the root of cause and effect, and therefore the Kagyu lineage masters have always attached great importance to this teaching. Fourth, the faults of samsara are: if reborn in the hot hells, all the mountains and rivers are burning with fierce iron fire; the rivers and lakes are molten copper and boiling water; the trees are also rain of weapons such as swords; countless beasts and Yama's jailers kill and cut without a moment's peace. Among them, there are eight subdivisions, and the most extreme suffering is the uninterrupted hell, whose suffering is so intense that even the Bhagavan cannot describe it, because if it were described, compassionate Bodhisattvas might vomit blood and die. If reborn in the cold hells, all the mountains and rivers are covered with snow and ice; due to the extreme cold of wind and blizzards, the body freezes and shatters into countless pieces. They also die again and again during their respective lifespans of hundreds of millions of years, and are reborn again in an instant, continuing to suffer. The neighboring hells and solitary hells also suffer the same. If reborn as a hungry ghost, one will never find food and drink, and will be exhausted by extreme hunger and thirst, and will not be able to find even feces. Without clothes, one suffers from heat in summer and cold in winter. When it rains, sparks fall and one feels burned. The water seen is all pus and blood. The bones burn and emit flames. They regard each other as enemies and often beat each other.
