Da. The lifespan can reach fifteen thousand years. Animals in the great ocean are as numerous as the yeast in beer, living by devouring each other. They are constantly tormented by fear. Carried by the waves, they wander aimlessly. Those scattered and living in the mountains are always worried about the appearance of enemies, and their minds have no peace. They kill each other. Those possessed by humans are killed for cultivation and for their flesh and skin. On top of ignorance and delusion, there is the suffering of heat and cold, similar to that of hells and pretas. The gods of the desire realm are distracted by temporary happiness and do not remember the Dharma. Their lives are exhausted in an instant, and five signs of death appear seven days before the death of a god. Seeing that they will be reborn in hells and other places in the next life, the suffering of defeat and downfall is like a fish thrown onto the beach. Those in the four dhyanas and the formless realms also exhaust their karma and fall from their samadhi, gradually falling downwards. The Asuras, by nature, hate the glory of the gods, and only engage in warfare. Their power of merit is weak, and they do not like the Dharma, so they are defeated in battle, and the suffering of killing and being killed is very great. In the human realm as well, first, the suffering of birth is like a child being carried away by an eagle. The suffering of aging is like a mother camel losing her calf. The suffering of sickness is like a criminal being locked in a prison. The suffering of death is like a prisoner being chased by an executioner. Each of these sufferings has five aspects. Birth is accompanied by intense pain, so birth is full of suffering. The seeds of increasing afflictions are planted, so birth is the cause of bad rebirths. From birth come aging, sickness, death, and so on, so birth becomes a source of suffering. Afflictions gradually increase, and karma is accumulated, so birth becomes a source of afflictions. Because every moment is impermanent, birth involuntarily decays, which is suffering. The decline of color, the decline of shape, the decline of power, the decline of the senses, and the decline of enjoyment—these five declines make aging painful. Suffering and discomfort increase. The body naturally changes. There is no freedom to enjoy what is liked. There is no freedom to avoid what is disliked. Being close to separation from the life force makes sickness painful.

Suffering. Enjoyment, power, retinue friends, and even separation from one's own body, dying with intense feelings of discomfort, is suffering. Furthermore, despite enduring vile reputations and sins, striving with great effort, all desires such as food, wealth, and fame are not fulfilled, the suffering of searching in vain. Fearing the appearance of enemies, fearing the appearance of thieves, fearing the seizure by the powerful. Putting hats on stars, putting shoes on goats. Being troubled and exhausted by many affairs and works. Fearing failure, fearing disobedience, the suffering of not being able to enjoy what one has due to mental separation. Separation from indispensable ones such as parents, siblings, retinue, disciples, etc. The decline of power and enjoyment. The loss of great wealth. Due to bad luck, or being slandered by jealous ones, causing worries, etc., the suffering of being separated from what is desired. Illness, enemies, lawsuits, the punishment of the king, blessed beings, gossip, repaying kindness with harm, the betrayal of the retinue, etc., the suffering of encountering what is not desired. These eight sufferings are mainly present in humans. In short, even the three lower realms and gods and humans also have the suffering of suffering, such as illness and gossip. Life, enjoyment, peace, etc., seem temporarily pleasant, but the suffering of change due to rapid impermanence. The basis or container of both of these is the five aggregates of close acquisition, which is pervasive suffering of conditioning. Because relying on the five aggregates, all the sufferings of the three realms arise, therefore, no matter where one is born in samsara, high or low, one cannot escape the nature of the three sufferings. Dwelling, body, enjoyment, friends, retinue, no matter how temporary happiness and prosperity appear, they are only the sustenance of suffering, like giving food to someone with vomiting sickness, or leading a prisoner to the execution ground, where the executioner provides a feast for the one about to be executed, attachment is wrong. Cutting off craving, destroying the root of desire, liberating from these faults, considering the benefit of liberation as supreme, thereby striving to practice the path of enlightenment. Thus, these four common preliminaries generally appear in all stages of guidance. Here, Incomparable Dagpo supplemented from Jowo Je's three levels of individuals in the stages of the path, thereby making the Kadampa and Mahamudra like rivers merging into one.
