It is also said that taking refuge refers to having great benefits, and only a small part is mentioned here. After that, what is related to taking refuge is generating the mind of enlightenment (bodhicitta). Generally speaking, even if the mind is turned towards Dharma, whether or not one walks the path of Dharma depends on whether or not the mind of enlightenment arises in one's mindstream. No matter how great or small the virtue is, if it becomes a method for attaining Buddhahood, then it is said to be walking the path of Dharma. If one is seized by bodhicitta, not to mention virtuous deeds, even ordinary actions become methods for accomplishing Buddhahood. As the sutra says: If you want to attain perfect and complete enlightenment, you do not need to study many Dharmas, you only need to study one. What is that one? It is the mind of enlightenment. There are two types of bodhicitta: relative and ultimate. These two are the root of the eighty-four thousand collections of Dharma, so it is difficult to exhaustively explain them. Although many explanations are not needed in the context of meditation, if you want to understand them, you must study the Six Treatises of the Kadampa and so on. In short, the essence of relative bodhicitta is compassion. The essence of ultimate bodhicitta is the wisdom that realizes the nature of reality. These two also arise in dependence on each other. As Father Damapa said: If compassion does not arise, realization will not arise. Just as fish can only survive in water and cannot survive on land. Relying on relative bodhicitta, one can realize the ultimate nature of reality without error. At that time, for sentient beings who have not realized it, genuine compassion will naturally arise, and one will be able to use the three doors of body, speech, and mind for the benefit of others. Therefore, what is initially said, "whether or not one is seized by bodhicitta," is to be identified as relative bodhicitta, so one must first find a way to generate it. There are two types of bodhicitta: aspiring and engaging, and both must be generated through rituals. Some supreme individuals can generate bodhicitta by sincerely reciting the three vows of taking the bodhisattva vow in front of a support. Ordinary people must receive the vows from a virtuous spiritual friend whose lineage of vows has not been interrupted. In any case, afterwards, it is best to confess and take the vows six times a day and night, moderately at the beginning and end of each session, and at the very least twice a day and night. That is, in order to benefit all sentient beings and attain the state of Buddhahood that knows all things
