Teachings. Furthermore, in the Sutra Requested by Blo Gros Gya Tsho, it is said that there are ten activities of a Bodhisattva: abiding in the root of faith, relying on virtuous spiritual friends; with fierce diligence, seeking the supreme Dharma without partiality; with strong desire, not abandoning the effort to engage in virtuous deeds; with mindfulness, not wasting work and activities; not being attached to one's own merit, but maturing sentient beings; not regarding body and life, upholding the supreme Dharma; not being satisfied with the accumulation of merit; diligently making effort in the accumulation of wisdom; at all times not separating from the correct meaning; and with skillful means, completely seeking all paths. One should be diligent in these. Introductory teachings: If one wants a good harvest, it is not enough to just have seeds, one must work hard at farming. Similarly, it is not enough to just have the thought of wanting to attain Buddhahood, one must practice the Bodhisattva's conduct, both great and small, as much as possible. That is, giving, keeping morality, practicing patience, exerting effort, and properly training in meditation and wisdom, these are the six perfections. In short, as it is said, "For the sons of the conquerors, there is nothing that they do not need to learn," one should accumulate virtuous roots without partiality. Meditate on rejoicing in the virtuous deeds of others. Loving-kindness, which is the wish that all sentient beings may meet with new happiness that has never existed before, and to establish the cause of this happiness in virtue; Compassion, which is the wish that sentient beings may be free from present suffering, and in the future may also prevent the cause of suffering, which is non-virtue; Joy, which is rejoicing in the happiness of others' bodies and minds; Equanimity, which is to treat oneself and beings like one's mother equally, without distinguishing between importance and insignificance. Towards all sentient beings, without distinguishing between near and far, not being attached to one, not being hostile to one, but treating all equally, this is equanimity. That is, without differentiating between enemies, friends, and neutrals, to meditate in this way on immeasurable sentient beings pervading the ends of space, this is called the four immeasurables. Once one has entered the Great Vehicle Yoga, this is the core of practice, the essence of the Dharma. In the Kadampa teachings, through contemplating the relationship of cause and effect, loving-kindness and so on are generated in the mind-stream. Therefore, I must attain Buddhahood no matter what. The cause of attaining Buddhahood is the mind of enlightenment. The cause of the mind of enlightenment is compassion. Compas-

Love is the root of the Guru. Recognizing and repaying kindness is the root of love. Recognizing all sentient beings as one's parents is the root of love. Having realized this, first contemplate the kindness of your root mother and cultivate love. Similarly, cultivate love, expanding it to include all sentient beings sustained by life and breath. Do not pretend to be a Bodhisattva, acting hypocritically, hoping that others will see you as a good practitioner, or desiring food, clothing, fame, etc., or hoping to be better than others. Calling oneself an accomplished one or a realized one, these two are the root of ruin, so you must rely on the difficulty of obtaining leisure and fortune and the meditation on impermanence as antidotes. Even if you do some virtuous deeds and Dharma practice, if you only aspire to the happiness of gods and humans in the next life, it is contrary to Bodhicitta, so remember the faults of samsara and the results of karma. If only self-interest arises in your mind and the thought of benefiting others does not arise, then the root is wrong, so you must cultivate the mind of exchanging self and others. This is especially important. That is to say, oneself and all sentient beings are equal in wanting happiness, equal in not wanting suffering, and equal in the nature of Dharma without inherent existence. Oneself is singular, while sentient beings are numerous, so it is even more superior than being equal to oneself. Therefore, aspire to attain Buddhahood and then place all sentient beings in Buddhahood; this should not remain merely an intellectual understanding but must be firmly established in your mind. To achieve this, do not cherish yourself, and regard any sentient being as more precious than yourself. For the sake of others' happiness, be willing to endure even the most severe suffering, and engage in benefiting others with your body, speech, and mind. Even the small amount of virtue we do now, we do it for our own benefit. Entrusting others to do something becomes the merit of the one who entrusted it; this will not work. Not to mention Dharma practice, all actions, such as walking, standing, sitting, and lying down, should be done with the sole intention of benefiting others. If harm from illness and evil spirits occurs, or if you are hurt by others' words, or if afflictions increase, then gather and accumulate all the unpleasantness of sentient beings upon yourself. If suffering arises, know that it is due to past karma, do not be sad, and take on the suffering of others. If happiness and well-being arise, dedicate wealth and power to virtuous pursuits, do not remain idle, and engage in virtue with your body, speech, and mind.
