Although countless Buddha-fields exist, and countless Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Gurus, and Yidams abide in the ten directions, I have no karmic fortune to even meet one in my dreams. This root Guru teaches the complete and unerring method to attain Buddhahood in one lifetime and one body. Even if my body and life were reduced to dust, I could not repay his kindness. This is the second point. When thinking of offering Dharma and material possessions, I remember the Guru, but after a while, I forget. When sickness or misfortune occurs, I remember the Guru, but when I am comfortable, I do not remember. It is not like that. Rather, whether walking, standing, sitting, or lying down, whether happy or sad, I have no thought other than the Guru, and I remember him again and again. This is the third point. Sometimes, even if I remember the Guru, I merely say, "Please protect me!" or recite a few prayers and consider it done. It is not like that. Rather, with the force of devotion that makes the hairs on my body stand on end and tears flow like a river, I immediately transform my consciousness, stop ordinary appearances, and spontaneously generate realization. When these four intense devotions are combined, blessings enter the mindstream, and realization can arise suddenly. This is said to be devotion that meets the standard. Meditating on the Guru as the Buddha is the key to quickly receiving blessings. Furthermore, when practicing Mahamudra, visualize the Guru as the naked Dharmakaya. If you wish to prolong life, visualize Amitayus and White Tara. If you wish to pacify illness, visualize the Medicine Buddha. For demons, visualize the corresponding antidote deity. Whatever Tantric mandala you practice, you must view the main deity as inseparable from the Guru. This is the meaning of "Lord of the Mandala." By extending this analogy, various practices of Guru Yoga can arise. Forgetting kindness is a sign of disrespect for the Dharma. Without it, all efforts become meaningless, and qualities do not arise in one's mindstream. Taking this as a reason, if one's heart is broad, one will think of the Guru, and if one's heart is narrow, one will think that other Dharma teachers cannot have qualities either, thus cultivating wrong views. In this way, one breaks the root vows, and all the merit accumulated in the past is swept away as if with a broom. Remembering kindness, respect for the Guru and the Dharma arises spontaneously. In this way, all qualities arise effortlessly and spontaneously. If it is difficult to generate genuine devotion, make offerings to the Three Jewels, serve the Sangha, and accumulate as much merit as possible through physical and verbal virtuous actions, and then

Through the accumulation of merit, may special devotion arise towards the Lama. It is said that by praying and meditating in this way, strong devotion will arise. If devotion to the Lama is the best, then practice is also the best; if it is medium, then practice is also medium; if it is inferior, then practice also becomes inferior. Like Naropa, Maitripa, Milarepa, and Jajuipa, who practiced diligently for the sake of the Lama, and attained accomplishment solely through this, we ourselves cannot do that. Even artificial devotion is difficult to arise, so it is guided through prayer, and then gradually learned. There are four factors for devotion to become the path: If one sees faults in the Lama, just as when the Holy Yeshe saw Manjushri as a householder with a wife and children, and a thought of distrust arose, thereby hindering the attainment of supreme accomplishment, this is because of the impurity of one's own mind. How could the Lama have faults? Whatever he does is fine. Even if one sees impure conduct and lying, this must be the unsurpassed method for taming those to be tamed. Relying on this, there is no doubt that many beings will be placed in the state of maturation and liberation, which is a hundred or a thousand times more wonderful than others keeping pure vows. Merely not engaging in false pretense, one should think that this will not cause confusion about the conduct of the holy ones. In particular, if one is rebuked, bad karma will be exhausted; if blessings are given, evil spirits will flee; in particular, because the Lama is loving towards me, like a father treats his son in the world, not engaging in false interactions, one should think that the kindness is immense. If an unpleasant expression and a distrustful appearance seem to arise, one should think that it is because one's own karmic obscurations have not been purified, and thereby engage in purification, and strive to serve in a way that pleases the Lama's body, speech, and mind. In short, it is not to observe the Lama's faults. The Kagyu lineage masters have said: This qualified and precious Lama, whatever he does is good, whatever he does is virtue. Even if he does unpleasant butcher-like actions, that is fulfilling and good. Because he embraces beings with compassion. Even if he displays the behavior of sexual misconduct and debauchery, virtue will increase, and virtue will arise, this is a symbol of the union of skillful means and wisdom. If he deceives others with lies, it is also with various skillful means, leading all beings to the path of liberation. Even if he commits theft and robbery, it is for others.
