I, ultimately, upon fully accumulating the two accumulations and the six perfections, will become a Buddha who knows all things. Do not think that there are no tools and conditions for accumulating merit. It is said that if you have faith and wisdom in your heart, you have inconceivable ways to accumulate merit. Even if you only offer the seven-branch prayer with the mind of enlightenment, you can exhaust all obscurations and make the two accumulations as vast as the sky. Moreover, even a single prostration has ten benefits: a beautiful appearance, honest words, a retinue that can overwhelm all, the pleasure of gods and humans, association with the holy, great majesty, enjoyment of higher realms, and attainment of liberation. Furthermore, with great reverence, one prostration, the vast area of land touched by the five limbs, even up to the golden ground, as many dust particles as there are, one will obtain a kingdom equal to the number of wheel-turning kings. Even just putting your palms together to the Three Jewels has ten benefits, such as a beautiful appearance and a large retinue. These kinds of things are explained in great detail in the Sutras and Vinaya. The Kadampa Geshes of Jowo all practiced only the seven-branch prayer day and night, without doing other practices. From the time of the unequaled Dagpo Rinpoche onwards, the Kagyu lineage masters also had this tradition, but due to the obscuration of the gradual teachings, nowadays we have no desire to complete the accumulations at all. Even if we have a little, because both faith and diligence are small, the accumulation of merit is not put into practice. The existing statues, scriptures, and stupas are covered with dust. Those with great hearts even put their own torn hats and clothes under the feet of the statues. Even if one in a hundred people has a begging bowl and an altar, there is only ash and embers. They do unnecessary combing and dressing. They have never offered a single flower to the Three Jewels with emptiness and compassion as the root. They have never recited the seven-branch prayer even once, but they say that they have no merit. Where does merit come from? The Buddha said that the cause of merit is the accumulation of merit. Even for a grain of rice, they eat what they can eat, and offer what they cannot eat. Even though they have gold, silver, silk, horses, cattle, etc., they say that they have no merit and are very poor.

Thus. Saying, "I have no other wealth to offer," they offer a small oil lamp or a tiny bit of food, presuming it to be a great offering, and lying to the Three Jewels. Will there be merit in that? Therefore, it is very important to accumulate merit to the best of one's ability. There is no method for accumulating merit deeper than the Seven Branch Practice, which is not taught in all the Sutras and Tantras. Moreover, offering is better than prostrating, confession is better than offering, rejoicing is better than confession, and so on. The latter is more meritorious than the former. The content of the recitation can be decided according to one's own understanding, whether it is elaborate or concise. The important thing is to contemplate its meaning. Just reciting the words is self-deception. During the offering, it is said that an offering with outstretched arms is more meritorious than a mandala offering. Because it contains all the parts of the Six Perfections, the benefits of all of them will naturally arise. The immeasurable benefits of offering a mandala are explained in detail elsewhere. Just by offering a mandala, one can become the ruler of the heavens and the four continents, as stated in the Sutra of the Stacked House. From this, it can be inferred that just by applying perfume and offering flowers, one can be reborn as one of the Four Great Kings, etc. In short, the quickest way to complete the accumulation of merit is the characteristic of the tantra that is taught as the preliminary practice for the mandala offering. Now, no matter how generous one considers oneself to be, it is impossible to surpass the offering of counting numbers such as hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, and millions. In these offerings, there is always a mixture of defilements such as attachment to "I have offered so much" and the expectation of fame. There is even the hope and worry that "the lama will notice me." The number of objects of offering, no matter how many, will not exceed hundreds and thousands. The mandala is the outer container and the inner essence, the wealth that pervades the sky, so it is very vast. There is also no pride or defilement of "I am the one who makes the imagined offering." There is no need to have the hope or need for the Three Jewels to notice me. Because it is offered to the Three Jewels of the ten directions and four times, and the objects of offering are excellent and vast, etc., from all aspects, it is impossible for the accumulation of merit not to be completed, so one must strive to do it. Furthermore, building new statues, scriptures, and stupas, repairing old ones, making offerings to the Sangha, and even without wealth, doing cleaning work in the temple, etc.
