In treatises such as "Resting the Mind," three accumulations are taught: generosity, means, and aspiration are the accumulation of merit; discipline, patience, and diligence are the accumulation of discipline; concentration, wisdom, strength, and knowledge are the accumulation of wisdom. In the Sutras, two accumulations are taught: generosity and discipline are merit, wisdom is the accumulation of wisdom, and patience, diligence, and concentration belong to both. If these are not grasped by bodhicitta, they are merely works in accordance with merit and will not become the cause of liberation from higher realms. If they are grasped by bodhicitta, they are works in accordance with liberation and become the cause of Buddhahood. On top of that, if they are grasped by the view of the purity of the three spheres, they are uncontaminated accumulations and are the actual means of attaining enlightenment. There are three types of generosity: material generosity, giving food, clothing, utensils, and even ink and paper for writing, as much as one can afford. Even if it is just enough to not send a beggar away empty-handed. Later, one should aspire to take hold of the kingdom of a wheel-turning monarch and give away all one's body and possessions. Fearless generosity, giving medicine to the sick, protection from spirits, showing the way on cliffs, escorting in dangerous places, averting obstacles to practice and discipline, protecting from punishment, enemies, thieves, wild animals, and harm from the four elements, etc., actually putting into practice as much as one can. Later, one should make aspirations to be able to protect even from the suffering of the lower realms. Dharma generosity, if one has the ability to teach the Dharma, one should teach as much Dharma as one can that will definitely benefit others temporarily and ultimately, without looking at gain and respect and without arrogance. If one cannot, one should rejoice in teaching the Dharma to humans and non-humans, proclaiming the Sutras and Dharanis spoken from the Buddha's mouth. There are three types of discipline: the discipline of abstaining from misdeeds, guarding the ten non-virtues and other natural transgressions, as well as all transgressions against the vows of the three vows, as if protecting one's life. The discipline of accumulating virtuous Dharmas, not just being satisfied with a little bit of virtue, but putting into practice all that can be practiced from all directions, and for those that have not been practiced, one should aspire to when they can be accomplished. The discipline of benefiting sentient beings, from the moment of generating bodhicitta, one should strive to accomplish things that benefit others.

Accomplish as much as you can. For things that cannot be accomplished, make great aspirations. It is not enough to merely avoid being tainted by misdeeds. Patience also has three aspects: Patience that does not mind harm such as others' harsh words, beatings, robbery, etc.; Patience that accepts suffering without regard to unfavorable conditions, sickness, hunger, thirst, fatigue, and exhaustion when practicing Dharma; Patience that is not afraid but can understand the profound methods of mantra, the great deeds of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, and the meaning of emptiness free from elaboration, and has firm faith in the Dharma. These should be cultivated. Diligence also has three aspects: The diligence of armor, which is the unwavering spirit of a hero who rejoices in virtue without despising small virtues, thinking, "It's okay not to do this," and without being discouraged by great virtues, thinking, "I can't do this much"; The diligence of application, which is not being lazy until the end when engaging in virtue; The diligence of non-reversal, which is not being impatient even if warm signs and benefits do not appear immediately, but rather increasing effort until the fruit of what was initially undertaken is obtained. These should be practiced. In terms of meditation: Meditation that is extremely disciplined in body and mind, and dwells in bliss in this very life; Meditation that is practiced to manifest qualities such as clairvoyance and magical powers; Meditation that benefits sentient beings by relying on the power of samadhi. All three must rely on a calm abiding (shamatha) that is free from faults. Since calm abiding is the basis of all qualities, it is essential to establish a firm foundation. The cause of this is a secluded mind. This comes from a secluded body. This comes from few affairs and few activities. The cause of this is needing little desire. That is, being content with just the bare necessities of food, clothing, shelter, and bedding. In short, the root of calm abiding lies in little desire and contentment. In terms of wisdom: Wisdom that understands the ultimate meaning by realizing the emptiness of reality; Wisdom that understands conventional reality by being familiar with cause and effect and dependent origination; Wisdom that understands how to benefit beings through the four means of gathering. Or the three wisdoms of hearing, thinking, and meditating. These should be cultivated as much as possible. By accumulating merit in this way, immeasurable happiness of gods and humans will arise even temporarily.
