If one diligently strives in the methods of purification, it is not difficult to completely cleanse sins and downfalls. If one is skilled in means, even a small virtue can destroy a great mountain of sins. Saying "I have committed such and such misdeeds" is confession. To feel tormented with intense remorse for those misdeeds is repentance. To greatly admire and respect those who have not committed such misdeeds, while oneself is disheartened and ashamed for having committed them, and to speak honestly, requesting with heartfelt sincerity, "Please consider with compassion and purify these actions," is the meaning of repentance. For this, one must have the power of intense remorse for past misdeeds, like swallowing poison, which has the power to completely destroy sins; the power of strong resolve to never commit them again, even at the cost of one's life, which has the power to turn away from sins; taking refuge and generating bodhicitta, which is the power of reliance; and the power of constantly applying antidotes, which involves striving to accomplish whatever virtue is aimed at purifying sins, known as the six methods of purification, one must possess these four powers completely. If there is no remorse for past misdeeds, even if one merely goes through the motions of confession, sins will not be purified. If there is no resolve for the future, then all confession and virtuous deeds will be meaningless. Compared to reciting confessions hundreds of thousands of times without taking refuge and generating bodhicitta, a single confession with genuine refuge and bodhicitta is much more powerful in purifying sins. Compared to confessing sins for many years, receiving empowerment and confessing sins for just one day is much more effective in purifying sins, because the power of reliance becomes stronger and stronger. The same principle applies to the increase of sins and virtues. The six methods of purification are: reciting and proclaiming to others the names of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, such as Amitabha, Medicine Buddha, and Akshobhya, who are especially praised for purifying obscurations; building Buddha images, scriptures, and stupas; making offerings to the Three Jewels, honoring the Sangha, offering mandalas, and engaging in mandala and wheel offerings through entering into secret mantra, especially making offerings to the guru in five pleasing ways; reciting sutras and tantras spoken by the Buddha, such as the Prajnaparamita Sutra and the Sutra of Liberation; reciting the Vajrasattva mantra and the Hundred Syllable Mantra; and contemplating emptiness.

5. Reciting the profound dharani mantras of Kunrig Miktrubpa (All-Knowing Unwavering One) and others. Believing in the Tathagatagarbha and meditating on the meaning of selflessness. Visualizing the three spheres—the sins to be purified, the deity mantra that purifies, and oneself who is the purifier—as devoid of inherent existence, reciting and practicing the profound yoga of emptiness, or cultivating the aspiration of illusion-like appearance that is in accordance with reality. 6. If any of these are done correctly, they can thoroughly purify the cause and effect of sins. However, here, for the purpose of quickly purifying the gross sins that obstruct the arising of the realization of the Great Seal, the practice and recitation of Vajrasattva are taught. Moreover, the sins accumulated in this life are very obstructive to experience because the time is near. In particular, the three vows, and especially the vows violated against the body, speech, and mind of the guru, are extremely sinful. Violating other secret mantra vows, and consuming monastic property and ransom offerings, also diminish the existing experience and hinder the arising of new experiences. Therefore, this Vajrasattva Hundred Syllable Mantra is especially praised for purifying these. As Jowo Je said: Many subtle transgressions of secret mantra constantly arise. For example, if a mandala is opened in a dusty place, it will immediately be filled with dust. If asked, "Then will the opportunity for the arising of the path never come?" The answer is: "However, secret mantra has many skillful means, and many subtle transgressions can be purified in an instant by various means." Then he gave an extensive practice and recitation of the Hundred Syllable Mantra. In addition, the immeasurable temporary and ultimate benefits are unanimously proclaimed in the old and new tantras. The meaning of which is briefly recorded in the Indian treatises, as it is said: The nature of the all-pervading five wisdoms, dharani, mantra, and mudra, the examination of stupas and mandalas, are also no different from the Hundred Syllable Mantra. There is no such merit as that, which is superior to reciting the Hundred Syllable Mantra. Whatever merit is well-spoken of as superior to recitation, is adorned by all the Buddhas in the number of atoms. And: Whoever holds the Hundred Syllable Mantra, untimely death and diseases, and sorrows will not arise. Whoever holds the Hundred Syllable Mantra, poverty
