Even relying solely on each and every meditative path, one cannot completely burn the oil lamp. Without them, one cannot completely burn it either, but rather, relying on the preceding and subsequent moments in mutual dependence, it burns in that way. This is the method of liberation from defamation. Third, the divisions of reasoning that are free from addition and subtraction are: Briefly stated, if it is said that the reasoning of the irreversible meditative path of the Mahayana is profound, and that profoundness is free from addition and subtraction, then, if profound reasoning is classified, how many are there? How is it free from addition and subtraction? Profound reasoning has eight aspects, such as profound arising, which means that without relying on the preceding and subsequent generation of bodhicitta, bodhicitta cannot arise, and relying on it, it arises. There is no contradiction between arising and not arising, therefore it is profound arising. All phenomena do not cease in ultimate reality, but in conventional reality, they cease as soon as they arise, therefore it is profound cessation. Second, profound path means wisdom is: Even if suchness is cultivated at all times, it will not manifest without completing the three: perfection, maturation, and purification. This is the profoundness inherent in suchness. Third, profound abandonment and grasping is: All dharmas of suchness are impossible to accomplish, but one accomplishes various forms such as giving, which is the profoundness inherent in knowable objects. The object to be seen is the nature of suchness, therefore nothing is seen at all, and this is ultimate seeing, which is the profoundness inherent in wisdom. Fourth, profound practice and conduct has three aspects: the nature of conduct, its form, and its distinction. The first is: From the perspective of the nature of reality, there is nothing to be practiced, but in conventional terms, one engages in giving and so on, which is called profound conduct. The second is: In the nature of non-duality, which is free from the two extremes of existence and non-existence, one accomplishes all giving and so on, which is profound in non-duality. The third is: Even if the two accumulations of cause and condition are complete, one knows that one will not attain its result, Buddhahood, in ultimate reality, which is the profoundness of skillful means. As for the first point of the method of liberation from addition and subtraction, relying solely on each and every preceding and subsequent meditative path of the Mahayana can generate bodhicitta, and generating bodhicitta without them is addition, and generally not generating bodhicitta is defamation. Therefore, liberation from it is liberation from arising itself, so it is the meaning of profoundness, and the remaining seven should be applied in the same way.

Thirdly, regarding the nature of the practice of union. Having finished explaining the assembly of irreversible learning, the three unions, such as the union of samsara and nirvana being equal, are explained below. Now, what is the reason for explaining the three unions after the sign of irreversibility? If all the bodhisattvas abiding on the three paths attain the sign of irreversibility, will they become independent of the order of practice? In general, the practice of completely purifying the post-attainment of the ten bhumis has already been taught in the first chapter. The practice of abandoning the obscurations of samadhi will be taught in the fifth chapter. Therefore, here, the three unions of the uncommon practice of the bodhisattvas of the pure realms are taught: the union of samsara and nirvana being equal, which is the cause of the dharmakaya; the union of pure lands, which is the cause of the rupakaya; and the union of skillful means, which is the cause of activity. First, the meaning of the union of samsara and nirvana being equal is that in the post-attainment state, it is impossible to have discriminating thoughts that hold both samsara and nirvana as good or bad, different. Since such discriminating thoughts arise in the post-attainment state of the seventh bhumi and below, it is established as the uncommon practice of the pure realms. Here, there is the nature of the union and the refutation of objections to it. The first is that since all phenomena from form to omniscience are understood to appear but are without inherent existence, like a dream, therefore, it is the yoga of the pure realms that does not conceive of samsara as something to be abandoned and nirvana as something to be attained. That is, in the sutra, Shariputra said to Subhuti: If one abides in the samadhi of emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness in a dream, will the perfection of wisdom increase? Subhuti said: If it increases by meditating during the day, it will also increase by meditating in a dream. Why? Because there is no discrimination in dreams and during the day. Here, the dream shows samsara, because it is accompanied by the delusion of ignorance. The daytime shows nirvana, because it is awakening from the sleep of ignorance. Since there is no discrimination, it shows that in the post-attainment state, the discrimination of holding samsara and nirvana as different is also abandoned, thus implying samadhi. Second, there are four refutations. First, there are two refutations of the fault of having no karma. The first is the objection: Then there is no karma etc. even when awake.
