Firstly, non-restraint is obtained from all sentient and non-sentient beings and all seven branches of negative actions, because it involves engaging in acceptance from all doors, so it must be free from the five definites. The reason is that whichever of the three roots and mind one wants to attribute it to, it contradicts them simultaneously, therefore it is not obtained from everything. As for the teacher, if that were the case, then even butchers would not have non-restraint, because they do not wish to kill their own parents. Then, when horses, sheep, etc., become parents, because they do not wish to kill them, they would not obtain non-restraint from that. Moreover, there are also butchers who do not steal, so how can it be said that non-restraint is obtained from all branches? This is a refutation. Secondly, non-restraint is easily obtained by those born into its own kind, because they necessarily have wrong thoughts, so it is obtained merely by doing their own actions or activities. But it is difficult for those born into other kinds to obtain it; for example, one petitions the king, etc., saying, "I will make a living by this," and receives approval, and the king says, "Do it that way." From this, wrong thoughts are necessarily found, and then it is obtained through actions. Thirdly, the way to obtain the intermediate is: the remainder of restraint and non-restraint, in the intermediate state, is divided into non-revealing form and revealing form. Revealing form refers to the field, that is, the thought of offering to that place and the revealing form. Or the thought or acceptance that one will not eat food without prostrating to the Buddha, and engaging respectfully, arousing strong thoughts of virtue and non-virtue and then working, thereby obtaining it. Thirdly, by what cause is it relinquished? Restraint, non-restraint, the intermediate, and causes for relinquishing other than these three. The first has the causes for relinquishing individual liberation, meditative concentration, and freedom from defilements. Firstly, individual liberation is the taming of the senses, and its cause for relinquishing is that in the presence of someone who cannot communicate, one wholeheartedly abandons the objects of training, whether from the aspect of the entity or the basis, or whatever means, one relinquishes it. Because when saying "firstly abandon," one generates a revealing form that contradicts the correct acceptance. Death and transference also cause relinquishment, because one abandons the basis for which the activity was done. Because the basis for acceptance deteriorates, hermaphroditism occurs. Just as when a tree falls, because the root of virtue that arises from the foundation is severed, the root of virtue is severed. In summary, merely generating the incompatible thought, "I am unable to protect the vows of a householder," causes relinquishment.

Furthermore, the reasons why those abandonments do not occur are said to be considered when discordant thoughts arise beforehand. The upavāsa (close dwelling) is abandoned even after the night has passed, because the power of having taken it is exhausted. Some Sautrāntikas and those under the sun say that once any of the four root downfalls occur, the vows of a bhikṣu and śrāmaṇera are abandoned, because their minds are filled with great shame and shamelessness, and also because the scriptures say that they are not bhikṣus. Others, the red-robed sangha, say that they are abandoned when the holy Dharma declines, because all the boundaries of training and the limits of activities will disappear. They say that this only means that new vows cannot be obtained, but it does not mean that old vows are abandoned. The Kashmiris say that vows are not abandoned even if root downfalls occur, and they think of them as both virtuous and immoral, like a person who has debts but also has wealth. Just as paying off debts means being wealthy and not in debt, if one confesses root downfalls, one is virtuous and not immoral. Regarding how to understand this, there is the following reasoning: Does one root downfall abandon everything, or does it abandon gradually? The first case is unreasonable, because just as "when one direction is damaged, it does not cause all to be damaged," taking one vow does not cause all vows to be taken. The scriptures say that five defeats arise from a request, which also illustrates this, because if the previous defeat abandoned the vows, there would be no later defeats. From minor matters, when afflictions are exhausted, one should sit in the previous row, which also proves this, because without vows, one cannot sit in the previous row. Furthermore, if a bhikṣu who is immoral teaches a bhikṣuṇī, a downfall will occur, which also proves this, because the five groups are only established for bhikṣus. In the Sutra of Six Names and Six Things, it speaks of a bhikṣu who defames the path, and in the basis of ordination, it says to expel crows and defame, which means that immoral people should not be ordained. Therefore, this refers to the case where a root downfall has occurred but no intention to conceal has arisen; if an intention to conceal has arisen, mere confession cannot purify it, so how can one become virtuous? The Sautrāntikas refute this, saying that there is no proof of establishment, and that there is harm. First, the Teacher cut off the head of a chariot wheel; if it was blue before,
