It is reasonable. Because it is also present in the monastic vows, it will be said to observe one thing, etc. Furthermore, the statement "abstaining from killing" does not appear in any sutra, but it is a misunderstanding of the phrase in the Sutra of Seeing Truth, "Even to the point of life, having gone for refuge at the cost of life, manifestly utterly pure." Therefore, one should rejoice in higher virtue, and even that much is important, so it is said that even without vows or incomplete vows, one is still a layperson. In general, the scriptures speak of seven types of laypersons: those who hold the three refuges, one kind, several kinds, mostly practicing, complete, celibate, and those who keep the eight precepts of the upavasatha vows for as long as they live. The first five are from the Great Name Sutra, the sixth from the Vinaya-vibhanga, the Fierce One, and the Sutra of Maudgalyayana. The seventh is explained in the Sutra of the Wandering Ascetic Senarika. The Kashmiris do not accept this seventh one. Third, it also depends on the number of limbs and the length of time. The main thing is that whether it is small or whatever, it depends on how the mind is, such as pure motivation and non-attachment. Therefore, the vows of an arhat may be smaller than those of a child, the vows of a monk may be smaller than those of a layperson, and so on. Fourth, whoever goes for refuge to the Buddha, by whatever attainment one becomes a Buddha, and the dharma that establishes the distinction, the path of no more learning, the Dharmakaya; whoever goes for refuge to the Sangha, the noble person is the seven good men, and the dharma that makes one a noble person is both the path of learning and the path of no more learning other than the Buddha; whoever goes for refuge to the Dharma, that is Nirvana, the pacification of afflictions and suffering in one's own and others' minds. This is mentioned last in the arrangement of words. The basis of the Buddha and Sangha, the person, is contaminated, so it is not a place of refuge. The teacher says that if that is the case, then until the path is realized, one is not a Buddha or an Arhat, nor a noble person, and only the discipline that makes one a monk becomes a monk. Then he says that the Dharma is in accordance with this, and the person who is the basis of the Buddha and Sangha is considered to be both. The essence is to acknowledge and trust in relying on a special object in order to be liberated from fear.

And, regarding the connection, it is said in the knowledge of language that it is spoken in terms of the power of the time of acceptance. The meaning of refuge is that by relying on it, one is definitely and permanently liberated from all sufferings. Fifth, there are three: the reasons for establishing abandoning wrong conduct, lying, and intoxicants as limbs. First, for other vows, abandoning unchaste conduct is established as a limb, but for a layperson, abandoning wrong conduct is established as a limb. What is the reason for this? Wrong conduct makes others' wives unhappy and becomes the cause of falling into lower realms, so it is extremely condemned in the world, and it is easy for householders to keep vows, and in other lives of noble ones, they also obtain the vow of not engaging in wrong conduct, but unchaste conduct is not like that. If a layperson later marries a wife, will the vow not be lost? It will not be lost, because the vow is obtained by truly promising to abandon wrong conduct, not by promising to abandon unchaste conduct in this continuum. Or, because there is no promise not to engage in sexual activity with anyone other than this female continuum, one's own wife does not contradict the promise, so the vow is not lost. Second, what is the reason for establishing only abandoning lying as a limb? Because the fault is great and easy to abandon: because the saying of lies is extremely condemned, it is easy, and one can obtain not doing it. The special need is that when one transcends all trainings, it is because it is made a limb for returning and correcting. Thus, when discussing faults, if that is not what one should abandon, then speaking lies will exceed the training, and if it is shown to be abandoned, the fault will become twofold, thinking that this is not right, so there is a need to return and correct. Third, why is it that only abandoning intoxicants is established here among the sins prohibited and forbidden by the Able One? The reason is the previous three, and because intoxicants cause mindfulness to be lost, thereby leading to misconduct, so it is for the sake of protecting other limbs. The Mahasanghikas consider drinking alcohol to be a sin by nature, the Abhidharmikas consider it to be a sin by prescription, and the main thing to be prevented here is the afflicted consciousness, and it can also be drunk with an antidote mind. The difference between these two, the teacher is mind
