Moreover, a monk attending to the duties of parents is called such. Renouncing eight (precepts), renouncing them for one day and one night, receiving and upholding them through ritual, is the near-dwelling (vows); that is a vow for as long as one lives, or dwelling in attendance on the aggregates of an Arhat. Renouncing ten (precepts) through receiving, is a novice. That is also one hundred and one things that should not be seen, or because of being weary and exhausted by the work of the lama, that is why it is called that. Receiving vows, renouncing all that should be renounced by body and speech, is the monk himself, by the meaning of attending to completion. Third, from the sound of "Śīla," because it liberates from the suffering of immoral discipline, therefore it is discipline, and good conduct praised by the wise, and because it is the nature of action, therefore it is karma, although it is not the nature of intelligence, nor the nature of effort, but because it is made by intelligence and thought? Because it is the cause and result of action, therefore it is karma. By guarding against misconduct, it is called the vow of individual liberation. Fourth, why is it called individual liberation and the path of virtuous action? The manifesting and non-manifesting form of the first moment is the meaning of "Prātimokṣa," because it is first liberated from sin, therefore it is both individual liberation and vow, and after that it is only vow. At that time, the action is the real path of virtuous action, and after that it is the end. Fifth, the individuals who possess the vow of individual liberation are eight, namely lay devotees and so on. Is it a distinction or a repetition? It is not, because the above is a distinction, and here it refers to the individuals who possess (the vow), or in other words, is all renunciation, such as renouncing the five things to be renounced, lay devotees and so on? It is not, because it shows that there are only eight kinds that are possessed by the thought of renunciation. Second, explaining the undefiled meditation (vow), in whom it exists, following the mind, the vow of renunciation. First, the four realities of meditation, and the individual and vow born of proximity, because of the power of meditative equipoise, they renounce the seven faults of body and speech. The undefiled vow is possessed by the noble ones, and this also obtains the renunciation of seven (faults) through the path of the six levels of meditation. Second, what are the two vows that are said to follow the mind? The last two follow the mind of equipoise, the first is scattered.

Also follows the mindful and the mindless. (3) If all vows are the opposite of breaking precepts, then what are the vows that are actually abandoned? First, because it is not equipoise, it is the vow of abandonment. The last two are called breaking precepts, and the vow of abandoning the afflictions of its continuum. Moreover, because those to be abandoned are of the desire realm, their antidote arises from the invincible, and that is only included by the uninterrupted path. Therefore, those two have four sentences in common and in the vow of abandonment. Third, the sutra says: "The vow of mind is good!" and "He dwells restrained by the vow of the eye faculty," then what are the vows of mind and faculty? With the mindfulness that knows what to do and what not to do, and the memory that does not forget that, the opposing side is restrained, so the vows of mind and faculty should both be understood, for this reason the repetitive word is spoken, because it is a word of two twos. For example, it is like giving two pieces of food to two people. Second, there are four things that are all commonly explained: how long it lasts, how it is obtained, what causes it to be abandoned, and what it depends on. The first has three: the way of having non-revealing, the way of having revealing, and calculating the four sentences of those. The first also has four: the way of having individual liberation, non-vow, equipoise, and intermediate. First, the person who abides in the vow of individual liberation always has the non-revealing form of the present as long as he has not abandoned it by offering the training, etc., because it is not according to the mind, so it is always manifest. From the first moment until it is not abandoned, it also has the past. The future is not according to the mind, because it was not born before it was obtained, so it is not the nature of the Dharma to have it. Second, for the person who abides in non-vows, the same way of having is applied. Third, the two beings and noble ones who have the vow of meditation always have the past and the future until they are not abandoned, because they are according to the mind. The noble one without outflows does not have the past because he did not generate the outflows before the first moment, so he has the future, and others also have the past.
