How do afflictions of the desire realm increase? It is through attachment arising from hearing that those who have attained meditative absorption can emanate apparitions of desire realm beings; or through remembering previous attainments that have declined; or through knowing that apparitions are the cause of captivating desire realm emanations; or through desiring the objects of desire, such as smells, tastes, and touches, through emanations. The meaning of the term is that it is because of being endowed with desire that focuses on the five qualities of desire. It is like a vajra ring and the drink of Narisham. If we divide it extensively, there are eight hells, such as the Reviving Hell, and above that, two realms of pretas and animals, making ten realms of bad destinies; and six gods and four continents of humans, making ten realms of higher destinies, totaling twenty realms of desire. The cold hells are located directly opposite them, or on the four sides of the mating place, existing as retinues, so they are not primary. The ephemeral ones are not counted because their places, numbers, and extent are limitless. The Sautrantikas say there are sixteen hells. Animals are not counted because they have no fixed abode, but pretas, asuras, twelve continents of humans, and six gods are counted, totaling thirty-six. Secondly, the seventeen realms that are higher than the desire realm in terms of place and qualities are the form realm, according to the Two Suns Sutra. The Kashmiris consider sixteen realms, from the place of the Great Brahma's attendant to the quiet places away from villages, because there are no limitations such as numbers. Bhadanta considers eighteen realms, including the Pure Abode and the realm of the Great Lord of the Dense Array. The twenty-one realms that appear in the sutras are said to be the general name for the first category. The definition is that there is no attachment to coarse food and sexual intercourse, but attachment to form increases, or having a vessel that can contain form is the increase of its afflictions. The meaning of the term is that it possesses excellent form. The reason for being certain of seventeen realms is the difference in the causes of meditative absorption. In the form realm, the places of the first three dhyanas are divided into three by the distinctions of small, medium, and large, while the fourth dhyana is divided into five places by the distinctions of small, medium, large, alternating cultivation, and pure cultivation, totaling eight places. Thirdly, the division of the formless realm is because, at the time of the cause, there is only separation from attachment to form. There is no fixed place, only the opportunity to die above the realm of nothingness.

Now, by being born, the four aggregates are accomplished. However, the births that arise from the causes, equanimity, and good or bad conduct are divided into four types. So, in the lower two realms, if the mind's continuum arises dependent on form, then what does it rely on to enter there? The mind's continuum also enters relying on things like those of the same kind, life, individual beings, and attainment. Why don't the lower two also rely on that? Because that is weak, but this is born from the formless meditative absorption of perception, so it has power. Those depend on each other and on past actions. The Sutra school says that if that is the case, then entering depends on reliance, so it is impossible to regress, because there is no regression or it is the same, but like a spear and a house, it enters and regresses, so that meaning was spoken. The characteristic is being free from desire for form and expanding from the four aggregates of name. The meaning of the word is shown in the eighth stage. Thus, craving divides the outer boundaries into three sections, so it is the three realms. The desire realm has twenty places, but there is no distinction of being free from desire, so it is one ground, and the upper two each have four, so there are generally nine grounds. Second, dividing into five destinies: the division itself, its nature, and showing the differences of those. The first is: explaining the meaning of the five destinies that appear in the sutras, in those three realms, hell beings, and so on, hungry ghosts, animals, humans, and gods, these five destinies are shown by their own names. In the desire realm there are four complete destinies, one aspect of gods, and in the upper two there is one aspect of gods. Asuras are able to compete with gods in terms of enjoyment and body, and are relatives, because they are gods, but because they are inferior, they are called non-gods by adding a negative word, as well as the well-assembled hungry ghosts, and from mindfulness, the black and white aspects are animals and gods. Some sutras say there are six destinies. Also, pot-bellied ones, flesh-eaters, beings, decaying ones, body-decaying ones, maddening ones, forgetting ones, drying ones, shadow-pressing ones, rakshasas, sky-roaming demons, and bird demons are all hungry ghosts, nagas and crawling ones, garudas are animals, rakshasas are a type of human.
