In short, the twelve types of consciousness are universal. The treatises say that the others (consciousnesses) are produced by skillful means, therefore there are consciousnesses arising from the twelve sources of perception. The unobscured and unspecified, not included in the four, is: "That is indeterminate, not an affliction." The ṭīkā (Sanskrit: ṭīkā, commentary) says: "In the second, etc., the body and eyes..." and "Speaking of which, the lower ones also..." These also do not apply to the four. The venerable Asanga says: "There are others, beyond the four, so this is supplementary and complete." The teacher Āryadeva clarifies the nature of the indeterminate, like a vase. He explains that this shows that it also exists in the mind. However, distinguishing into twenty is: the virtue of the desire realm enables the virtue of the form realm, and thereby the virtue of the formless realm, all three of which can enter the uncontaminated, which is only the acquired virtue. The emerging mind is also mostly acquired. The innate virtue of the desire realm is clear, so it is said to be the emerging mind of all five samādhis. The innate virtue of the dying mind and the unobscured and unspecified are only the result-born and the behavioral. Acquired virtue and indeterminate skillful transformation cannot be the dying mind. Because the transformation mind of the desire realm is the result of the acquired virtue of the form realm. Therefore, only distinguishing between virtue and unobscured and unspecified, it is divided into twenty. By what attention does one enter and emerge from the uncontaminated? The acquired virtue of the three realms is: thinking that form is destructible and perishable, etc., having its own characteristics, as well as the general characteristics with sixteen aspects, and the faith attention of the unpleasant and immeasurable, etc., any of these three can enter and emerge from the uncontaminated. Some explain that one enters with general attention and emerges with all three. Some say that emergence is also only with general attention. Third, from where are these twelve consciousnesses obtained? Which consciousness manifests, thereby obtaining the clear cause of the connection of another consciousness, there are five situations: at the time of rebirth from the upper realm returning to the lower realm, at the time of entering the form realm, formless realm, and uncontaminated samādhi, at the time of detachment from desire from ground to ground, at the time of complete degeneration from that, and at the time of rebirth connecting (to the next life) from the severance of the root of virtue.

The so-called "mind obtained from non-possession" means that when the two defilements of desire realm existing in the three realms manifest, six types of minds can be obtained. When the root of virtue is separated by doubt, the innate virtue of the desire realm can be obtained; when born into the desire realm from the upper two realms, whichever of the two defilements manifests, both of them and the innate virtue can be obtained; when degenerating from the Arhat state due to non-virtue, the mind itself, the two obscurations of the upper realms, and the mind of the learner can be obtained, totaling six types. Among them, for non-virtue, the complete obscuration is the mind to be abandoned by seeing, so it is impossible to degenerate from the Arhat state, so at most only four types can be obtained, but in general, these two can obtain six types. The obscuration of the form realm can also obtain six types. When born into the form realm from the formless realm, the mind itself, the innate virtue, and the two unindicated transformation minds of the desire and form realms can be obtained; when degenerating from the Arhat state due to this, the obscuration of the formless realm and the learner can be obtained. When the obscuration of the formless realm degenerates from the Arhat state, the mind itself and the two learner minds can be obtained. From the virtuous mind born in the form realm, when first entering the unobstructed path, the mind itself can be obtained; when the ninth stage of the liberation path is free from attachment to the desire realm, the two transformation minds can be obtained, totaling three types. When the learner manifests, four types can be obtained. When first entering the stainless samadhi, the mind itself can be obtained; when the ninth stage of the stainless liberation path of the unobstructed path is reached, although the actual virtue can be obtained, it is not counted because its kind already existed before. At this time, the two transformation minds must be obtained; when the ninth stage of the liberation path is free from attachment to the fourth stainless dhyana, the virtue of the formless realm can be obtained. The remaining two virtues of the desire and formless realms, the two obscurations, the obscuration of the form realm, and the non-learner, whichever of these six manifests, the attainment of that mind itself can be obtained, but not others. When separating the virtuous mind with right view, the innate virtue can be obtained, and when arising from later practice, the mind itself and the obscurations of the three realms can also be obtained. "Not taught, naturally born, co-born, and undetermined." In this way, due to the manifestation of self-nature, one can obtain oneself; the virtue of the formless realm can also obtain oneself when entering samadhi; when knowing the contaminated, one can obtain the non-learner.
