It acts as an obstacle. Lack of faith is displeasure or disbelief in the mind. Its function is to be the basis of laziness. Lethargy is a state of mental dullness that makes the mind unfit for work. Its function is to be a companion to outflows. Excitement is the mind wandering and scattering on things like previous play and amusement. Its function is to obstruct calm abiding. These six are the many grounds of affliction because they always arise in an afflicted mind. In the Abhidharma treatises, other than lethargy, five others are taught: forgetfulness, distraction, non-alertness, improper attention, and wrong belief, making ten in total. The reason why five are not mentioned here is that they are attributed to mindfulness and so on. The reason why lethargy is not mentioned there is that the Vaibhashikas say that it is in accordance with samadhi, because practicing lethargy quickly generates samadhi, while practicing excitement does not. But the teacher says that both lethargy and excitement are equally obstacles to samadhi, and since it is impossible to practice both together, the fact that it is not mentioned even though it is a ground of affliction is the fault of the treatise writer himself. The fourth is the many grounds that necessarily arise in all unwholesome minds, namely shamelessness and lack of embarrassment, whose characteristics will be explained below. The fifth is that anger is being tormented or agitated inwardly by focusing on a sentient being who is harming you. Its function is to do things like striking with a stick. Holding a grudge means cherishing and not reconciling after being angry at the same object. Its function is to be the basis of intolerance. Deceit means that when others urge you to confess your faults, you do not admit it, but with a false intention, you send words to the wind and so on. Its function is to obstruct obtaining the true advice. Jealousy is intolerance of the perfections of others. Its function is the basis of mental unease. Vexation is clinging tightly to sinful actions. Its function is to generate non-merit. Concealing is hiding sins. Its function is to obstruct advice. Stinginess is clinging to and not giving away one's own Dharma, wealth, and objects of wisdom. Its function is to prevent the diminution of resources. Illusion is for other purposes, such as gaining profit and respect,

Fearing separation, clinging to the three non-genuine trainings, showing what does not exist as existing. Karma is the basis of wrong livelihood. Pride will be explained below in its definition, karma is the basis of outflows. Harm is wishing suffering upon sentient beings. Karma is harming with sticks and so on. Such ten are the grounds of minor afflictions, because the coarse aspects contradict the five, such as attachment, and because they do not think wrongly about ignorance and truth, they are similar to and possess the mind and mere intention to be abandoned by meditation. Some say that the associates, companions, categories to be abandoned, places of arising, and bases are small. The order of the five groups is: the first is extensive because it arises in all minds, the second is worthy of offering, the third is more extensive than the lower two because it arises in all afflictions, and the fourth arises in all non-virtues, being more extensive than the last, so it is shown above. The second is the uncertain associate, which has two types: the associate of the desire realm and the associate of the upper realms. The first is the eight uncertain ones, as stated in the commentary of Dignāga: "Investigation and analysis, and regret, duality and anger, the nature of desire, pride and doubt are called eight, said to be uncertain." That is to say, these are the uncertain groups, the others are easy, in the three certainties of afflictions, investigation and analysis have three, sleep has the first two, regret has the first, attachment and aversion have the last two, and pride and doubt have none in between. Thus, forty-six and view, that is, forty-seven are directly stated in the root, and the king's son said that view is also uncertain, so the summary term does not enter the ear, but view is imputed to wisdom, so the summary term is reasonable. Thus, forty-six are substantially existent, and the six that arise in relation to view are nominally existent. Relying on that, counting the mental factors that arise as retinue in the mind of which realm, for this, in all virtuous minds of the desire realm, since it is mind and virtue, there are the first and second groups, and since investigation and analysis arise, there are twenty-two mental factors, because the desire realm mind necessarily has investigation and analysis. In some minds there is regret, there add it.
