Like four rays. They arise together with them. Thus it is said. All conditioned phenomena and the four characteristics of conditioned phenomena necessarily arise together, and those that appear as sentient beings arise together with their attainment. Or, those that do not appear as sentient beings do not arise together with attainment, because there is no attainment and the two cessations do not arise. The continuums of sentient beings also arise together with life force, commonality, and ordinary beings, but the reason why they are not mentioned here is either to represent or it is uncertain. Characteristics and attainment are definitely the basis of characteristics and what is to be attained respectively, and having arisen together, they have been mentioned, but others do not have them. If you think like this, it is enough to just arise together here, it is not necessary to be definitely separate, so it is said. Therefore, form is definitely arisen together with those differences that do not have inner, and mind and mental factors are also definitely arisen together with them, and sometimes the four arise together, that is, when the eye and its consciousness, mental factors, and characteristics arise together. Second, the detailed explanation is divided into two: the way mind and concomitants arise, and the way non-associated formations arise. The first is divided into four: categories based on certainty, concomitants based on uncertainty, differences that seem like one, and one that seems like differences. The first is divided into two: brief explanation, detailed explanation. The first is: the way in which which mind and which mental factors arise together can be understood by dividing mental factors into five categories, because the many grounds of mind and so on are different. The second is divided into five: the many grounds of mind, the many grounds of virtue, the many grounds of great afflictions, the many grounds of non-virtue, and the small afflictions. The first is: feeling experienced by its own power, the function is the basis for the arising of craving by contaminated dharmas, and placing it in equanimity by uncontaminated dharmas. Thinking that manifests the mind, its function is to make the three doors enter into virtue and so on. Perception that grasps the characteristics of objects, the function is to apply terminology to contaminated dharmas, and to place it in equanimity by uncontaminated dharmas. The intention to act, the function is to be the basis for initiating diligence. After the conditions are gathered, to the object.

Cessation of change is contact, and its function is to be the basis of feeling. The wisdom that discriminates well is wisdom, and its function is to dispel hesitation. Holding onto the object without forgetting is mindfulness, and its function is to prevent the mind from wandering. Attention is the activity of the mind, that is, the mind focuses on the object. Its function is to hold the mind on a specific object. Aspiration is to hold the object as a virtue or to desire it. Its function is not to be taken away. Samadhi is the mind focusing single-pointedly on the object. Its function is the basis of wisdom that knows things as they are. Thus, these ten depend on all minds or arise from seeing an opportunity, hence they are called the many mental states. Secondly, faith is what separates from the defilements of afflictions and near afflictions. Its function is the basis of desire. Vigilance is cultivating virtuous dharmas such as faith and cherishing them. Its function is to accomplish all transcendent perfections. Pliancy is the mind being workable, that is, being able to endure focusing on the object, and its function is to eliminate the five obscurations. Equanimity is the mind being equal and spontaneously accomplished. Its function is not to distinguish between the objects of the two afflictions. Self-respect and conscientiousness will be explained below, and their function is to restrain misconduct. The two roots of virtue are the absence of attachment to and pursuit of the aggregates of appropriation, and the absence of hatred and resentment towards them. Non-ignorance is nominally wisdom, so it is a common many-ground dharma. Both also have the function of not engaging in misconduct. Non-harming is compassion, that is, having the function of not being incompatible with height. Diligence is rejoicing in virtue, and its function is to accomplish perfect virtue. These ten are always present in all virtuous minds, or arise from many sources such as the six aggregates, the three realms, contaminated and uncontaminated, so they are the many virtuous grounds. Thirdly, delusion is the ignorance that will be explained below. Its function is to be a helper of the two afflictions. Non-vigilance is not cultivating virtue and not guarding the mind against outflows. Its function is the basis of misconduct. Laziness is not delighting in virtue, and its function is towards virtue
