If asked: Is that so? No. Among the six consciousnesses, the support of the last, mental consciousness, is, because two consciousnesses do not arise simultaneously, so it is only the immediately past mind. The supports of the five aggregates of consciousness, such as the eye, etc., are born together with them, that is, simultaneously. The word "also" indicates that the past mind is also a common support. Fifth, if asked: If consciousness arises from both the sense faculty and the object, then is only the sense faculty considered the support? Because the sense faculties such as the eye become clear and unclear, the consciousness also becomes clear and unclear, so the eye, etc., are the support, while form, etc., are not like that, so it is not said to be the support. Sixth, if it is said: Even if the sense faculty is the support, is consciousness indicated by the support, but not by the object? Because the sense faculty is the support, so in terms of one continuum, form is common to eye consciousness and mind consciousness, the eye is the cause of only eye consciousness, while form is the cause of eye consciousness of other continua, and the eye is the cause of eye consciousness of only one continuum, so it is not common. Because of this, only through the eye, etc., is the name of consciousness indicated, but not through the object, just like "the sound of a drum" and "the sprout of barley." Seventh has four points: the difference between the four, eye, etc., the ear is also similarly indicated, the certainty of the three, nose, etc., the uncertain indication of the mind. First, if asked: When eye consciousness arises inside the body, thereby seeing form, are these four in the same ground or in different grounds? Generally speaking, the support, eye, and form are the desire realm and the four dhyanas, that is, the fifth ground, while consciousness is the desire realm and the first dhyana. Their certainty is that the body of the upper ground will not manifest the eye of the lower ground, because clearly there is the superior eye of one's own ground, so there is no need for the inferior eye of the lower ground. In terms of the ground of meaning, on the body of one's own ground, one's own ground's eye can be manifested, and on the body of the lower ground, the upper ground's eye can be manifested, therefore connect the eye of the desire realm and the eye from the first to the fourth ground to the support of the fifth ground. The eye of the lower ground cannot see the form of the upper ground, because the inferior object is not superior. Through the seeing of oneself and the lower ground, connect the eye of the desire realm and the eye from the first to the fourth ground to the object of the fifth ground. Kind

Moreover, the so-called "knowing" refers to combining "the lower ground's eye consciousness is not the consciousness of the upper ground." Just as lion's milk does not rely on earthenware, relying on the inferior lower ground's eye consciousness, the superior upper ground's consciousness should not rely on it, therefore the desire realm and the first dhyana's eye consciousness rely on their own ground's consciousness. From the second dhyana onwards, there is no consciousness in their own ground, therefore the upper ground's eye consciousness manifests the lower ground and the first dhyana's consciousness. However, the upper ground does not manifest the consciousness that is considered the fourth dhyana, because the first dhyana has superior qualities. The just-mentioned first dhyana eye consciousness, regarding its object of perception, form, should also be combined with "everything below," that is, from relying on the first dhyana's eye consciousness to see the desire realm and its form, to relying on the fourth dhyana's eye consciousness to see all five forms. If it is considered that the inferior object is not superior, then how can the upper ground's form be an object? Just as a weak person relying on a king can become strong, it is because of relying on the superior upper ground's eye consciousness. The body as the basis, both the object of perception, form, and the consciousness that possesses the object, can serve as the basis for everything. For example, the body of the first dhyana is what the consciousness of the first dhyana relies on to see the form of the first dhyana, as well as the forms of the desire realm and the second dhyana and above. The body of the desire realm is what its own ground's consciousness and the consciousness of the first dhyana rely on to see form, and the body of the second dhyana and above is like what the consciousness of the first dhyana relies on to see all the forms of the upper, lower, and self grounds. So, here, if the body of the desire realm relies on its eye consciousness, and its consciousness looks at its form, then everything is in the same ground. If the body of the desire realm relies on the eye consciousness of the third dhyana, manifests the consciousness of the first dhyana, and looks at the form of the second dhyana, then everything is in different grounds, and so on, can be combined according to the situation. Second, regarding the question about the ear, and what ground it is, and the determination of each, it should be explained in the same way as for the eye. The body does not have the lower ground's ear, the ear cannot hear the upper ground's sound, the consciousness is also its sound, and the body can also serve as the basis for everything of both, it should be widely combined. Third, the questions about the nose, tongue, and body are the same as before. The ground is the basis, the sense faculty, and touch are the fifth ground, and smell, taste, and the consciousnesses of the nose and tongue exist only in the desire realm. The consciousness of the body exists in the desire realm and the first dhyana.
