It is the earth element. If the eye consciousness has not arisen, then those three and the non-arising dharma are not dependent on their own activities, but can become the object of the eye, because their nature is the same, so they are the same, and so on up to touch. The seven mind elements, if they arise, are certain to enjoy the object with their own activities, so all the arising and changing of the three times are dependent, and only the non-arising dharma is the same as that. What is the nature of that sameness? Whichever element does not do its own work, therefore it is not dependent. That which does its own work is said to be dependent. In this case, the function of the sense faculty is shown as the nature of the object's object-possessor and the basis of consciousness. The object is shown as the nature of the object and focus of the sense faculty and consciousness. Consciousness is shown as the nature of the basis of the sense faculty and the grasping of the object, or as the basis of the action of seeing with the eye, and so on. In relation to what is established as dependent and the same as that is that the sense faculty and consciousness are dependent on one, and that is dependent on all, because their own activity is dependent and the seeing of others, etc., is their activity. That sameness is also the same, but since objects, etc., are common, they are established as both by the difference between doing and not doing activities by different continuums. If it is said that the three, smell, taste, and touch, grasp by contact, so that what is in contact with one does not come into contact with another, so it should not be established like the eye, etc., it is not so, because there is no certainty that they are grasped only by this continuum and not by others, because they can be grasped in common, so they are established by the power of the general continuum, as the commentary says. The ṭīkā says that an elephant and a worm in a nostril can commonly grasp the same smell, which is explained as not being a big deal because of the difference in coarse and fine particles. The upper ones only establish dependence and sameness on the five sense faculties, and do not allow it on others. The third has two parts: the actual text and the refutation of objections. The first is that among the eighteen elements, the ten form elements are to be abandoned by meditating on them as one. Moreover, the first five consciousness elements are also to be abandoned by meditation, because they are inanimate and non-conceptual, so they do not have inverted thoughts about the truth, and they are also not related to inverted thoughts, so they are not to be abandoned by seeing, but because they are contaminated, they are to be abandoned.

Iro. The three lower realms have three types: what is abandoned by seeing, what is abandoned by meditation, and what is not abandoned. The first is to obtain eighty-eight subtle growths. Furthermore, all wholesome contaminated, non-obscuring, and indeterminate things with ten subtle growths and their retinues are abandoned by meditation, while uncontaminated things are not objects to be abandoned. The definition of what is abandoned by seeing is: to have wrong views about the truths of the noble ones, directly and indirectly. Although it is said that way, since there is no wrong view in things that are not concomitant, it is a contaminated object to be abandoned other than what is abandoned by meditation, or it is what is abandoned by the antidote, the path of seeing. The definition of what is abandoned by meditation is: to enter wrongly into the self-nature of knowable things. Although it is said that way, since things that are not concomitant and not afflicted do not have self-nature, it is a contaminated object to be abandoned other than what is abandoned by seeing, or it is made an object to be abandoned by the antidote, the path of meditation, in relation to the noble ones. The second view is that the Sthavira Nikāya says: The deeds of body and speech that are the cause of birth as an ordinary person and in the lower realms are abandoned by seeing, because when the path of seeing arises, they are reversed. In response, it is said: An ordinary person is not abandoned by seeing, because they are not afflicted. If these are wholesome, then they do not lack the cutting of wholesome roots; and if they are afflicted, then they will not be in accordance with detachment, therefore they are non-obscuring and indeterminate. Otherwise, because the obscuration of the interruption of the path is abandoned, one would become an ordinary person even at the time of the acceptance of the dharma of suffering. The deeds that are the cause of lower realms are also not abandoned by seeing, because they are form. The statement in the upper scriptures that what is abandoned by seeing refers to the afflictions of the motivation of sentient beings is unreasonable, because it is a characteristic. Furthermore, both of these are not abandoned by seeing, because they are not born from the sixth mind. It is unreasonable to think that what is born from the five senses is what is abandoned by seeing, as the commentary says, and the commentary is made to show an example. Here there are four situations: not abandoned while separated, separated from that, both, and neither. The first situation is: when the path of seeing is obtained, like an ordinary person. The second situation is: like the sense faculties of an arhat that have form. The third situation is: when the path of seeing is completely obtained, like what is abandoned by seeing. The fourth situation is: things other than these. The fourth situation has two aspects: direct and extended from that. The first situation is: the eighteen realms.
