From... the three belonging to the formless realm are definitely with defilements, because in terms of category, those last three exist in the samadhi of the three paths. The unconditioned dharma realm is without defilements, while all others are with defilements. The remaining fifteen realms are all with defilements, and it is impossible for them to arise in samadhi, because they are conditioned phenomena that are not the truth of the path. Secondly, among the eighteen realms, which are those with perception and examination? Which are those with only examination and no perception? Which are those with neither? The answer is: there are two situations, reality and avoiding contradiction with the scriptures. The first situation is: the five consciousness aggregates are only with perception and examination. Here, "with" means essence, being connected as an assistant to what should not be done. The five consciousness aggregates exist below the first dhyana, and they are only with both perception and examination, because they look outward. The last three in counting will become three forms such as having perception, having examination, etc. For those three of the desire realm and the first dhyana, for the associated dharmas other than perception and examination, these two must exist as assistants, therefore they are with perception, with examination. The special three are other than examination, and the perception of the desire realm and the first dhyana must have examination as an assistant, because there is no perception, so there is only examination. The three of the second dhyana and above are the ground beyond perception and examination, and the special examination does not have a second examination. Those non-associated in the dharma realm are the formations that are not associated with matter, and the unconditioned dharmas, therefore there is no perception and no examination. So, what will the examination of the desire and first dhyana become? Examination must have perception as an assistant, but there is no second examination, so there is only having perception without examination. Then, will the last three become four forms? Indeed. However, this is done to be consistent with the three-group classification of "three with perception, etc., and three samadhis." The remaining ten form aggregates, because they are matter, cannot be associated with perception and examination, therefore these two are abandoned. Second, avoiding contradiction with the scriptures. So, if the sutra says that the five consciousnesses have no perception, is this contradictory? It is not contradictory, because among the three perceptions, although essentially having perception, it must be perception.

And since there is no conceptualization in the form of recollection, there is no conceptualization. It is like saying that a horse with only one leg has no legs. So what is the nature of the two conceptualizations? Among these conceptualizations, the first will be explained below. The second is: wisdom that is concordant with mind consciousness, other than meditative equipoise, distracted, innate, and arising from hearing and thinking, relies on names to enter into meaning, and necessarily conceptualizes, so it is called that. The third is: all mindfulness that is concordant with mind consciousness and not in meditative equipoise is the characteristic of mental expression, not relying on names, but only entering into the experience of meaning, so it is the conceptualization of recollection. The third is: among the eighteen elements, those with a single object are the seven mind elements and half of the mental factors of the dharma element, just as an old man rises by relying on a cane, these arise because they necessarily rely on an object. The remaining ten form elements and half of the non-concordant dharma are not object-oriented, although the five sense faculties are object-oriented, they do not arise from them, nor are they other object-oriented. The fourth has four: taken and not taken, arising and arisen, accumulated and not accumulated, severing and to be severed, and so on. The first is: the meaning of taken is that form relies on the benefit and harm of internal encounters and can serve as a basis for the arising of pleasant and painful feelings. Not taken is the opposite of this, so among the eighteen elements, nine are not taken, and half of what is said to be object-oriented and half of eight must also be added. These eight and sound: the first eight are not in the aggregate of faculties, so they cannot act as benefit and harm, and sound is related to the continuum, and it is also not in the aggregate of faculties, so it cannot be there. The other nine are both taken and not taken: the present five faculties can serve as a basis for feeling, and the past and future do not abide in the object, so they cannot act as benefit and harm, so neither is. For the four outer elements, the present faculty and the non-different are taken, and those different from the faculty, except for the root, such as hair and so on, and all the past and future not included in the continuum are not taken. Above it was said that the sound of the faculty and the aggregate that are not different is taken. The second, among the eighteen elements, touch is arising.
