It is caused by desire. Joy is the happiness of mind that arises from focusing on the happiness of others. Equanimity is like treating relatives neither intimately nor distantly, it is non-attachment. It is the antidote to harmful thoughts that precede attachment. The teacher says that equanimity is the nature of being equal to both attachment and aversion. The aspect is, alas, from the bottom of my heart, I hope that these beings have happiness, are free from suffering, and never leave joy, and may beings be equal without attachment or aversion. If it is not like this, then wouldn't the belief in this be reversed? The answer is, thinking in the heart, "May there be happiness" or believing, because it is a thought of joy, it is not reversed. Even so, it will not become unwholesome, because it is the antidote to harmful thoughts and so on. The realm of practice is that because harmful thoughts and so on arising from oneself and close people exist in desire, its antidote is to focus on beings of desire. Joy is mental pleasure, so it is in the first and second dhyanas, and others are without attachment and aversion, so they are in all six dhyana grounds, or some say that there are only five actual grounds, or some say that there is no samadhi or adding application, so it is the ten grounds. These four do not actually abandon harmful thoughts and so on, because they are actual practice or believing in mindfulness, and are focused on insignificant beings. As it is said in the Commentary on Valid Cognition: "Love, etc., are not contrary to delusion, therefore, they cannot completely eliminate extremely serious sins." However, the desire and near-attainment gathered by the application of these can suppress harmful thoughts and so on, and the actual practice can serve as an antidote to prolong the abandonment, so it is said in this way. The way to generate it is that if the afflictions are small, one believes in beings as if hearing the happiness one experiences or the happiness that Buddhas and others have. If it is large, it is divided into three
