Suppose, what is samadhi according to the sutras? It is when the mind abides and abides correctly. The fourth extreme has four branches: the effort towards desire and happiness in the third of exhaling and inhaling, the five antidotes to incomplete samadhi are, because of being free from faults, mindfulness and equanimity are completely pure, and the benefits are, feelings that are neither happiness nor suffering and the basis of both are samadhis, etc. Therefore, the second is samadhi, the third is benefit, and the fourth is complete purity, which is superior to the former. Those branches are eighteen from the perspective of names, but in terms of the nature of real objects with the same characteristics, there are eleven, namely the five of the first, the first of the second, the four of the third, and the three of the fourth. The second is, why is the happiness of the third dhyana said to be a different substance? That is feeling, and in the first two dhyanas it is shown that because of extreme pliancy it is happiness, so it is different. In equanimity, consciousness cannot exist, and because joy is mentioned, the feeling of body and mind cannot be happiness. The detailed refutation and establishment of this has already been written elsewhere. Internal complete clarity is, the trusting faith that necessarily arises from the first ground, or the difference of the fortunate is, it is considered to be just the pacification of the disturbance of investigation and analysis. The joy of the first two is mental happiness, and it is known from two kinds of scriptures that there is no mental happiness in the third dhyana, and also because dhyana necessarily arises from the branches. The first scripture is, in the Sutra of Transformation, when explaining the third dhyana, it says that here all mental happiness will cease, and in the Hundred Thousand Verses, from the perspective of the fourth dhyana, happiness is also abandoned, and before that suffering was also abandoned, and mental happiness and unhappiness also cease. Some schools consider joy to be a different mental factor, and the Mind-Only school considers the feeling of the consciousness retinue to be the only basis, Alaya, and the dependent, because it satisfies the mind, it obtains the names of happiness and mental happiness. The second has three aspects: whether it is afflicted or non-afflicted, whether it is faulty or faultless, and the difference between arising and equanimity. The first is, do all of those exist in the afflicted? No, because it is not separate from the afflictions of that ground, so the first does not have the joy and happiness born from separation, and also the virtue disturbed by it.

Therefore, the second dhyana is completely pure internally, and joy is disturbed by afflictions, so the third dhyana is mindfulness and awareness, and because it is defiled, the fourth dhyana lacks equanimity and pure recollection. The pliancy of the second dhyana and the equanimity of the third dhyana, even if not mentioned, are virtuous, so it is established as non-existent, or some say it exists. Some say it is virtuous, so the first two dhyanas have pliancy, and the latter two have no equanimity. According to this, joy is merely the absence of non-virtue in the desire realm, excellence is merely the cessation of investigation and analysis, and mindfulness and awareness are merely thought of as mindfulness and wisdom. Secondly, if asked what it means that the third dhyana is said to be moving because it has defects, and the fourth is unmoving, according to the Middle Length Discourses? It is said that there are eight defects, and the defects themselves are explained as the sound of moving, or that it is unmoving because it is liberated from what causes it to move. The sutra says that one who has cultivated and abides in the fourth dhyana, his mind is like a lamp without wind, neither high nor low, and he obtains immovability. What are those defects? They are investigation and so on. Thirdly, if asked whether the feeling of meditative absorption exists at the time of birth? In the first dhyana of birth, there are three feelings, namely mental pleasure, the pleasure of the three sense consciousnesses, and the equanimity of the four consciousnesses. In the second, there are two feelings, equanimity and mental pleasure. In the third, there are two feelings, mental pleasure and equanimity. In the fourth, there is only the feeling of equanimity. Thirdly, then, in the second dhyana and so on, since there is no consciousness of body, eye, and ear, seeing, hearing, and touching are interrupted, and since there is no investigation and analysis, physical and verbal actions are also impossible, so will there be no speaking and acting, etc.? Although those three consciousnesses and the collection of actions are not present, they exist in that basis, just as the emanation mind of the lower ground manifests, those motivating minds and investigation and analysis, first manifest investigation and analysis, and that is unindicated, because it has been abandoned, it is not afflicted. Inferior or virtuous is the result, and one born in the higher realm does not seek the result of the lower realm, therefore it is not virtuous, but it manifests without being obscured by the power of need.
