Recollection of birth by nature is also due to karma. Dhyana-born beings exist among gods and humans in the desire and form realms, while those born from other causes exist among humans. The difference between being born with and arising from karma is: Whichever realm a being is born into, from the moment of birth, it is certain that they will naturally attain the fruits of that realm; this is the first. The term "being" excludes the magical transformations of the intermediate state, and the term "moment of birth" excludes the later attainment of fruits, as in the case of birds and the like. The second is: Born from the distinctions of previous karma. Whoever obtains the name of clairvoyance is solely dhyana-born. The commentary on the Abhidharmakosha, called "The Sun Illuminating the Meaning of the Treatise," is the seventh chapter. Now, the eighth chapter will be explained. The clairvoyance and so forth mentioned above, from dhyana downwards, are not the nature of consciousness, so they are explained here. Actual absorption, and the qualities that depend on it. First, absorption is divided into eight, samadhi into three, and dhyana into four. First, the classification of dhyana, the cause of absorption, is commonly established. The first is: Because it pervades as the basis of all qualities and is also in accordance with the order, dhyana is explained first. If summarized, dhyanas are of two types: causal absorption and resultant birth. The difference between the two is: Is it only equipoise or both? Is it only virtuous or both indeterminate? Is it only dhyana-born or also born with, or from hearing, as cause and effect? Is it only in its own ground or also manifests in the lower grounds? Is it constant or occasional? Is it only the main practice or also includes the preparatory? It is called fruit and cause. Each of these is also fourfold from the first to the fourth dhyana, so there are eight. Those who are born in dhyana are excellent. To show the essence, the higher realms are said to be seventeen. Second, the four dhyanas, the four formless absorptions, and the conclusion of both. First, the general nature, the individual characteristics. The first is: The nature of absorption, according to the Vaibhashikas, is: The mental factor of samadhi, which makes the mind one-pointed on a virtuous object. The companions are the five aggregates together with the followers, because the non-cognitive is necessarily present. All are also samadhi and

It is unreasonable to think that "the first dhyana that conforms to (the four dhyanas)." If that were the case, only the state of one-pointedness of mind would become dhyana, just as the state of the palm is the essence of the hand. After refuting this, one's own view is that one-pointedness of mind itself is dhyana. The Sutra Pitaka says, "The main things that are the training of higher mind and the complete purification of mind are the four dhyanas." The meaning of the sound is that the word "dhyana (Tibetan: དྷྱཱ་ན།, Sanskrit Devanagari: ध्यान, Sanskrit Romanization: dhyāna, Chinese literal meaning: meditation)" is called dhyana because it thinks extremely, meaning that if the mind remains calm, one can know things as they are. Although afflicted beings do not have extreme thinking, because of evil thinking, just like a seed rotting, it is said in the Sutra of the Assembly of Brahma that this is called dhyana. The second part is divided into two points. The first point is: the one-pointedness that has investigation, joy, and happiness is the characteristic of the second dhyana and above, and it eliminates desire, because it is impossible to separate in this state, so investigation also represents examination. If it is okay to say "having investigation," why not say it? Answer: The commentary says, "Abandon the previous branches," therefore, the characteristic of abandoning investigation also becomes the second dhyana, so it is not said. Some people explain that the characteristic is to abandon the previous one and have the latter one, and the characteristic is that even if the previous one is abandoned, it does not have joy, so there is no fault, and because the examination is the same, investigation is used to represent examination. For Maha (Sanskrit: महा, Sanskrit Romanization: mahā, Chinese literal meaning: great), if it is a wise person, this is the case, but for a foolish person, the previous one (investigation) may also exist. The latter three are the one-pointedness that abandons the previous branch and has the latter branch, that is, the one-pointedness that abandons investigation and has joy and happiness, the one-pointedness that abandons investigation and joy and has happiness, and the one-pointedness that completely abandons the three and has form, therefore, the branches of dhyana are called renunciation. The second part includes: the general nature, the respective characteristics, and the meaning of the sound. The first point is: like dhyana, the formless is also divided into two, four, and five birth places, and it makes samadhi become one-pointedness. The difference is that if there are followers, there are only four skandhas, because there are no friends who are not of the same kind. The second point, the respective characteristics, are: separated from the object of the lower and lower grounds, and born from the proximate cause that can transcend, that is, born from the separation lower than the fourth dhyana, starting from the sphere of infinite space, up to the peak of existence, therefore, the formless is called liberation from the object. Therefore,
