The five are: Because of wrongly engaging in the self-character of knowable things, they are only to be abandoned through meditation. They only possess ignorance and are not dominated by attachment, etc., so they are autonomous. Similarly, defilements are also to be abandoned through meditation and are autonomous. The second is: The near afflictions that exist in the desire realm are non-virtuous because of their great power. However, dullness, agitation, and sleep are both non-virtuous and obscured. Sleep that is not an affliction is not all-pervasive, and everything above the desire realm is obscured and unspecified. The third is: In the desire realm and the first dhyana, there is deceit because of the association with the main retinue. How do we know that it exists in the first dhyana? Because Ashvajit asked Mahabrahma where the four elements cease, and even though he did not know, he said, "I am Brahma, I am Mahabrahma," etc., entrusting the words to the wind, deceiving and leading the retinue to ask the Buddha. The Buddha replied, "They temporarily cease in the formless realm, and ultimately in the place of Nirvana." In order to show that he has wisdom, he spoke falsely, so it is established that deceit also exists. Dullness and agitation are the companions of afflictions, while pride does not contradict any form, so it exists in all three realms. The other eleven near afflictions, because they transform into only non-virtue in terms of form, are only born from the desire realm. Second, with what are those associated? They are divided into two companions, with what feeling are they associated? The first is: Among those, how many are companions of mind and companions of the six consciousnesses? Those to be abandoned by the path of seeing among the root and near afflictions are those that look inward, and sleep and pride are to be abandoned by the path of meditation, but they are not clear and have investigation, so they are companions of the consciousness of mind. The autonomy of near afflictions is also definitely with investigation, so it is a companion of mind. Other than those, the three poisons and the four all-pervasive ones are to be abandoned by the path of meditation, and in general, they are dependent on the six consciousnesses. Second, with what are the root afflictions and with what are the near afflictions associated? The first is the association of the desire realm and the upper realms. First, with what are they individually associated? With what are they all associated? The first is: The happiness of body and mind, these two, are associated with the companions of the six aggregates and with desire, which has the form of joy.

Anger, on the other hand, has the aspect of sadness, and is therefore accompanied by the suffering of body and mind. Ignorance is uninterruptedly characterized by joy and sorrow, and is the basis of many afflictions, and is therefore accompanied by all five. Considering that there is no (cause and effect) is to see that sinful actions have no consequences, and therefore the mind is happy; considering that virtuous actions are meaningless even if one strives for them, and therefore the mind is painful; hesitating when seeking true meaning, and therefore the mind is uncomfortable; the four other views and pride are accompanied by happiness, because they are characterized by joy and are the root of the mind. These are from the perspective of subtle differences in the case of arising from desire and not tending towards cessation, and the case of tending towards cessation is not clear. Second, equanimity is certain to be accompanied by all subtle differences, because the Compendium says that it tends towards cessation by relying on the ordinary state. Second, the subtle differences of the higher levels are that, in whatever level there is whatever feeling, it is accompanied by its own corresponding one, as it is. For example, the first dhyana has three: pleasure, joy, and equanimity; the second has joy and equanimity; the third has physical pleasure and equanimity; and the fourth has only equanimity, so it is said and translated. There is no sin committed there, so how can it be accompanied by wrong view and joy? It is explained that it is because one knows that the actions previously done with desire as the basis will not produce results, or because one does not see all afflictions as faults. Moreover, the higher levels are because quiescence moistens the continuum, so afflictions are not established as joy and sorrow, but are accompanied by whatever feeling is appropriate. Second, there are the ways of accompanying each, all, and the four many levels. First, from regret to resentment belong to the aspect of sadness and are the root of the mind, and are therefore accompanied by unpleasant feeling. Stinginess and so on arise from the cause of attachment and belong to the aspect of joy, and are therefore accompanied by the opposite, pleasant feeling. Cunning, deceit, and concealment are understood as whether one's own purpose is accomplished or not. Sleep does not contradict anything, so it is accompanied by both. Until the second dhyana, the joy of the three levels and the pleasure of the third dhyana are both accompanied by drowsiness. Second, equanimity does not contradict any of these aspects, so it exists as a friend, whether tending towards cessation or not tending towards cessation. Third,
