Furthermore, shamelessness, lack of embarrassment, excitement, and sleepiness, these four, because they are the great earth of unwholesome and afflictive emotions, are likely to be associated with all five feelings. Third, explaining that the five obscurations belong to the desire realm, divided into the actual explanation and the determination of number. First, (the actual explanation): What is the meaning of the "five obscurations" mentioned in the sutras? Do those afflictions also include the upper realms? Answer: Because it is said to be solely unwholesome, these that exist in the desire realm are the obscurations, not those that exist in the upper realms. Does the meaning of the word "sa" refer to only, solely? Answer: In the commentary, it is said to be an obstacle to meditation and meditative absorption. Second, (determination of number): Aren't there seven obscurations? Why are they said to be five? Answer: Because the opposing factors, antidotes, causes, food, and functions are the same and similar, dullness and sleep are combined into one. The food for dullness and sleep is five dharmas, namely: delusion and displeasure, attention and, food, warmth not maintained, mind withering. The antidote is moonlight, etc., cultivating the perception of light. "Not in accordance" refers to the combination of words. The black not in accordance is the white side, the antidote is a well-known term. The function of both is to make the mind wither. The food for excitement and regret is four dharmas, namely: relatives, environment, and the thought of immortality, remembering past playfulness, etc. The antidote is to cultivate calm abiding, the teachings on the difficulty of obtaining leisure are, through thoughts of impermanence, etc., causing aversion. The function of both is to distract (the mind). Thus it is said. Although all afflictions are obscurations, only five are mentioned because they are the harmers of the three aggregates to be obscured, and without wisdom, one doubts the truth, therefore it is said to be five. For those who have not obtained the precepts, they are the harmers of obtaining the precepts and the abiding and purification of the precepts already obtained, namely, craving for desirable objects and harmful thoughts; they are the harmers of samadhi, namely, excitement and regret; they are the harmers of wisdom, namely, dullness and sleep. The Mind-Only school says they are obstacles to the preliminary, actual, and subsequent stages of meditative absorption. Second, the distinction of the antidote, divided into: how to abandon, the distinction of the antidote, from where to separate and abandon, the method of maintaining distance after abandonment, and the merit of abandonment being repeatedly possessed. First, (how to abandon), divided into: the method of abandoning what is to be abandoned by seeing and what is to be abandoned by cultivation. First, (what is to be abandoned by seeing): The first two categories are those that focus on their own ground, and the path of cessation is what is to be abandoned by seeing, focusing on the uncontaminated.
