Then, what is the explanation? Clinging to existence is appropriation. Merely ignorance, because it is not obvious, is not the cause of clinging. When mixed with other afflictions, it is mixed because it is the cause of clinging. The two venerable ones consider that desiring and clinging to the four, such as desire, are the four appropriations. Second, regarding the meaning of the words. There is the general meaning of subtle latent tendencies, and the specific meaning of contaminated ones. First, why is it called subtle latent tendencies? Because those afflictions are difficult to perceive as they run in the continuum, so entering is subtle, and they increase in two ways, by attainment and accordance, and by object and association, and when they have not abandoned their own nature, they follow again and again, just as they are eliminated without effort, therefore they are said to be subtle latent tendencies. Among them, the first and third explain the meaning of the words, and the other two explain the meaning. Second, those cause beings to abide in samsara, or from the gate of the wounds of the six sense sources, they flow out and drip, or they walk or carry to other places, and they combine and adhere in those, and for future existence or the four, such as desire, they cause consciousness to closely grasp and take, therefore they are outflows, and so on, are the meanings of those subtle latent tendencies that are established as water mixture and appropriation, just like pus and rivers and giving and iron hooks. The Sutra school considers subtle latent tendencies to be latent, therefore, subtle and causal conditions and accordance and latency, that is, when encountering causal conditions, they increase in two ways, and they consider that they follow until the antidote has not arisen. The teacher explains from other meanings of the words. Second, there are two types: teaching and explanation. First, those subtle latent tendencies themselves are all combinations, and so on, and they are also divided into five types by the distinctions of bondage and subtle latent tendencies and near afflictions and universal entanglements. If asked: How can near afflictions be considered as synonyms for subtle latent tendencies? In the टीका of the Work Indication, fundamental afflictions also appear as near afflictions, and in the outflows of desire and all combinations, near afflictions are also mentioned, and they are also established as synonyms when the names are the same. Second, there are four types: all combinations, bondage, near afflictions, universal entanglements. First, nine types of all combinations are proclaimed, and five divisions are explained. First, there are three views and two, jealousy.

The reason for establishing stinginess as a binding. First, the first three views and the latter two views are the same in the three realms, having eighteen kinds of things; the three views are the same as holding to be supreme; the two views are the same as the object of holding, therefore the latter two views and the previous views are different bindings. The Middle Way and the extremes are said to be different because they obstruct the knowledge of the two truths of cessation and path. Second, among all the latent tendencies, why are only jealousy and stinginess said to be bindings? For what reason? Because both are completely unwholesome and have autonomy, therefore jealousy and stinginess are separated from those latent tendencies and are said to be two bindings. Shamelessness, etc., are associated with attachment, etc., and do not have autonomy; regret is only associated with ignorance, and although it has autonomy, it is not completely unwholesome. Others say that this answer is suitable for those who think there are eight latent tendencies, but this answer is not suitable for those who think there are ten latent tendencies. Good Protector says that these two repeatedly appear, so they are especially binding in the good realms. The second is associated with the lower divisions, and there are five associated with the upper divisions. First, having essence and function. The reason for the three bindings. First, the sutra says that the five bindings associated with the lower division desire realm, namely, the view of the perishable body, the view of holding precepts and vows as supreme, and doubt are included in the three realms, and desire and anger are the desire realm. How do they correspond? The latter two make people not go beyond the desire realm, because they are only the afflictions of the desire realm. The former three make people go beyond the desire realm once and be born in the upper realm, but they also make people retreat, because ordinary beings will not stay there forever, and there is a reason for rebirth. For example, the gatekeeper does not allow people to come out of prison, and even if they escape from prison, they will be caught back because of the pursuit. The Mind-Only School believes that the former three make sentient beings' lower ordinary beings, and the latter two make the lower desire realm unable to go beyond. Second, if the view, etc., are also cut off at the end of the stream-enterer, then why does the Great Name Sutra say that only cutting off the previous bindings can become a stream-enterer? The door of clinging to extremes is the view of the perishable body.
