The arising of merit. Even barren fields can produce desired results. The first case is: How can the people of the east and west mountains, who offer things to stupas but cannot enjoy them, obtain merit? Although offering to stupas without being able to enjoy them does not produce merit, giving with a good intention does produce merit. For example, even if there is no recipient and no actual benefit to others, cultivating immeasurable minds such as loving-kindness and correct views can generate merit through the power of one's own mind. The second case is: Naked ascetics believe that satisfactory fruits arise in good fields, while unsatisfactory ones arise in bad fields. Even if one gives with the intention of benefiting bad fields such as thieves, if a fruit arises, it will only be satisfactory, because it is a virtuous act. The general case is that it is usually seen that fruits arise from causes without confusion. Second, explaining the other two cases: their respective natures, the fruits of both, and the merit of Brahma. The first case includes discipline and meditation. The first is: Immoral discipline is the naturally unwholesome, the form of indicative and non-indicative. Abandoning these is the desired discipline, i.e., both indicative and non-indicative. Moreover, the precepts established by the Buddha, such as abandoning afternoon meals, both indicative and non-indicative, are also disciplines that become branches of the former. These are pure, possessing four qualities: not having produced the actual fault of immoral discipline, i.e., not having broken the precepts; not having produced the fault of its cause, afflictions; relying on its antidote, mindfulness and close placement; and relying on peace by dedicating it to liberation. The second is: The samadhi of meditative formlessness, samadhi, and the associated wholesome contaminated and uncontaminated are meditation, because for the mind, the qualities of samadhi are most habituated and become its nature. Second, the fruit of both is that giving for the sake of heavenly realms is also possible, but because it is the antidote to the lower realms, discipline is primary. Discipline also indirectly severs afflictions, but actually the uninterrupted path severs them, so for this purpose, meditation is primary. The third is the merit of Brahma: The sutra says, four kinds of people
