Therefore, it is so. Secondly, the current ritual has three aspects: the means to attain what has not been attained, the means to protect what has been attained from being lost, and the nature of adverse conditions and obstacles. The first aspect has two parts: the former part is ordination as a novice monk (śrāmaṇera), and the latter part is the full ordination (upasampadā). In the first part, there are three differences that were not present in the previous ritual but are present in the current ritual: relying on the preceptor (upādhyāya), asking about obstacles, and learning the teachings gradually. To explain these three in order, it says "going forth" and so on. And "the first preceptor himself" and so on. And "the male lay follower himself, the novice monk himself, the monk himself, etc., said that one should not do the latter if one has not taken the former." In this context, there are two aspects: necessity and summary meaning. The first is that it is necessary to bestow the three vows of a male lay follower, etc., in order, because there is a need for the vows to be stable, for the teachings not to be abandoned gradually, and for those who go forth and take full ordination not to incur transgressions of vows. The second has three aspects: examining which is the cause of non-arising without it and the cause of establishment, examining whether the latter is permissible on the basis of the former, and the meaning of each. The first is, are the former vows the cause of non-arising without them for the latter vows and the establishment? Some say that it is the cause of non-arising without it, because without the intermediate going-forth vow, the novice monk does not arise, and without the novice monk's vow, the full ordination vow does not arise. Without the intermediate going-forth, the novice monk's vow does not arise, as the scripture says: If a householder goes forth and takes full ordination, is it called complete? It is called complete. The commentary says: A novice monk is only referred to as one who has gone forth. The reasoning is: Without the near-abiding vow for celibacy, the nun's vow arises, and without the intermediate, the novice monk's vow arises. Thus it is said. Without the intermediate, the novice monk's vow and the full ordination vow arise, as the Vinaya-vastu says: Not gone forth, full ordination. The scripture also says: If a householder who has not gone forth takes full ordination, is it called full ordination?

If it is not properly completed, it will cause serious violations for those who make it complete. The commentary also says: This only explains the way of establishing, but not the cause of arising. For example, without the lay vows, it is permissible to properly take the novice vows; similarly, without the novice vows, it is permissible to properly take the bhikkhu vows. Therefore, this sequence explains the proper acceptance of all vows. For example, if a monastic layman who has not been ordained wants to take the bhikkhu vows, should one say "has taken the bhikkhu vows" or "has not taken the bhikkhu vows"? The attendant should say "has taken the bhikkhu vows." Some quote that without the near-abiding celibacy, the arising of the bhikkhuni vows, the karma of bhikkhus and bhikkhunis is not different, which is also irrelevant. Second, the former can be used as an introduction to the latter. The scriptures say: After taking the lay vows and the novice vows, the precepts are spoken without mentioning the order of time. If it is said that the precepts are spoken after mentioning the order of time, it is unreasonable, because the commentary says: Immediately after taking the lay and novice vows. Third, regarding the meaning of each, there are three points: the definition, etymology, and classification of a layperson. First, the definition: Anyone who has not been ordained promises to abandon the five things to be abandoned for as long as they live. Second, the etymology: Some say that because they properly serve the Sangha, they are called laypersons. The own view is: The Sanskrit word for layperson is Upasaka (Tibetan: ཨུ་པ་སི་ཀ་). Upa (Sanskrit Devanagari: उप, Sanskrit Romanization: upa, Chinese literal meaning: near) means near, and Sika (Sanskrit Devanagari: सिका, Sanskrit Romanization: sika, Chinese literal meaning: good) means good, because it is close to the ultimate good, that is, Nirvana (Sanskrit Devanagari: निर्वाण, Sanskrit Romanization: nirvāṇa, Chinese literal meaning: extinction), it is called a layperson. The Minor Commentary says: It is called a layperson because it is close to Nirvana. Third, in other treatises, there are seven types of laypersons: laypersons who take refuge in the Three Jewels, laypersons who practice only one thing, laypersons who practice a few things, laypersons who practice mostly, complete laypersons, celibate laypersons, and hired laypersons, but here only complete and celibate laypersons are discussed.
