Two. There are three for a novice monk (śrāmaṇera). First, the definition is: Any individual who has ordained but has not yet received the full ordination of a monk (bhikṣu), and who promises to abstain from the ten things to be abandoned for as long as life lasts. The etymology is: The Sanskrit word for novice monk is śrāmaṇera, which means diligent, therefore, because one is diligent in the work of the lama or the sangha, one is called a novice monk. Some also say that because one has the state of practicing the four qualities of a śrāmaṇa, one is also called a novice monk. The classification is twofold, father and mother, because it is said (in the sutras) that "there are also two kinds of novice monks." Third, the definition of a monk (bhikṣu) is: Any individual who has entered the Dharma and has received full ordination, and who promises to abstain from all physical and verbal misconduct. The etymology is: The Sanskrit word for monk is bhikṣu, which means to beg, therefore, because one begs, one is a monk. In the sutra that highly values monks, it says: Because the meaning of the words is completely exhausted, and because of begging for virtue and begging for food, and because of approaching peace and entering the path, and because of living well and abandoning attachment, and because of being pleasing, one is called a monk. The classification is twofold, father and mother. The way to receive the vows of the first two is: At the time of "taking the words of refuge," the way to receive the vows of a lay devotee (upāsaka), and the two ways of cutting off doubts. The first is: The one to be tamed who strives for the purpose of ordination, sits properly in front of the qualified monk who is the abbot (khenpo), serves with respectful conduct, the monk asks well if there are any obstacles, and after knowing that there are no obstacles, says "I will ordain you," thus beginning. Then have him prostrate three times to the teacher and the monk himself, have him recite the refuge formula, and bestow it through three promises. That is, recite "Venerable one, please listen, I, named..." from "the best of the two-legged" to "I take refuge in the sangha. Please, venerable one, accept me as a lay devotee from now until the end of my life," repeat three times. In the last instance, one should say "acharya (preceptor)." What is the basis of the Three Jewels here? The Buddha Jewel is the Dharma of becoming a Buddha, the truth of the path of no more learning. The Dharma Jewel is nirvana, etc.
