The General Meaning of the Root Verses of the Vinaya Sutra, A Good Explanation, Light of Illumination, Clear Meaning of Words. 《The General Meaning of the Root Verses of the Vinaya Sutra, A Good Explanation, Light of Illumination, Clear Meaning of Words》 The treatise entitled "The General Meaning of the Root Verses of the Vinaya Sutra, A Good Explanation, Light of Illumination, Clear Meaning of Words" is presented. Om, may there be well-being, may there be accomplishment). This is entitled "The General Meaning of the Root Verses of the Vinaya Sutra, A Good Explanation, Light of Illumination, Clear Meaning of Words." To the King of Dharma of the Three Realms, the Lord of Dharma, the Knower of all the Vinaya Pitaka, I prostrate and take refuge with reverence in body, speech, and mind. Please grant your blessings! For all that is to be known, utterly destroying the darkness, From the ocean of existence, liberating all beings without exception, By showing the truth as it is, skillfully guiding them, To the all-knowing Shakya Lord, I pay homage. Completely filling the mandala of the qualities of the Three Trainings, By the white light of the hundreds of thousands of sections of the Vinaya, Eliminating all the suffering of immoral conduct, May the light of the virtuous monks protect this world. Having embarked on the great ship of discriminating wisdom and diligence, Having reached the far shore of the ocean of the Dharma Vinaya, Distributing the feast of the precious jewel of morality, Having paid homage to the feet of the glorious Lama, In order to clarify the aspects of the root of the teachings, the Pratimoksha, From beginning to end, For the sake of refreshing my own memory and benefiting others, Therefore, I am delighted to explain it. Thus, the Bhagavan's attainment of unsurpassed Bodhi was solely for the sake of sentient beings, and therefore, having attained it, it is necessary to work for the benefit of sentient beings. And this is accomplished by showing the pure path that leads the trainable beings to Nirvana, and not by any other means. As it is said in the Lankavatara Sutra: The Buddhas do not wash away sins with water, nor do they remove the suffering of beings with their hands, nor do they transfer their own realization to others, but they liberate by showing the truth of Dharma-nature. As it is said. And it is necessary to establish the trainable beings in the three trainings. If one does not abandon the afflictions, one will not attain Nirvana. And to abandon the afflictions, one needs the training of higher wisdom, and for that, one needs the training of concentration and mind. And for that, one must be established in the training of morality. Because if one possesses morality, then in sequence, non-regret and so on arise, and wisdom arises with concentration.

The ground is powerful for abandoning afflictions. When establishing in the training of discipline, it is necessary to explain the means for those who have not obtained the Pratimoksha vows to obtain them, the means for protecting what has been obtained without deterioration, and the means for restoring it if it has deteriorated. Therefore, there are three aspects to explaining these characteristics here: the scriptures that are to be explained, the treatises of commentary that explain them and how their commentaries arose, and entering into the meaning of the present treatise. The first has two aspects: identifying the scriptures and how the Vinaya explains the Pratimoksha. The first is: the two types of Pratimoksha of the root Sutras, and their commentaries, the Vinaya-vastu, the Vibhanga, the Ksudraka-vastu, and the Uttara-grantha. Some say that these are spoken according to the sharpness of the faculties of the disciples, with the two Pratimokshas spoken for those with sharp faculties, the Vinaya-vastu and the Vibhanga for those with intermediate faculties, and the Ksudraka-vastu and the Uttara-grantha for those with dull faculties. This is unreasonable, because even relying on sharp faculties, such as the two excellent ones, the enactments for all four divisions of the Vinaya are spoken. Furthermore, there are two types of Ksudraka-vastu: the famous Ksudraka-vastu and the non-famous Ksudraka-vastu. The Uttara-grantha has the Vinaya-prccha, the Vinaya-viniscaya, the Ekottarika, the Pancavargika, the Sodasavargika, the Nidana, the Matrka, the root of the command-Vinaya speech, or miscellaneous, the questions of the Brahmin girl, etc., which have ten chapters. Of these, the first two are the Uttara-grantha, and the latter eight are the non-famous Ksudraka-vastu, because these eight are spoken by being included in the Ksudraka-vastu. This is unreasonable, because the seven Vinaya-vastus are chapters of the Uttara-grantha, and the miscellaneous Vinaya is not included in the four divisions of the Vinaya, but is explained only in the two commentaries of the Abhidharmakosa. It is unreasonable to consider the Nidana, the Matrka, and the questions of the Brahmin girl as Ksudraka-vastu, because the root of the summer matter belonging to the Nidana, etc., is not indicated by the name Ksudraka-vastu, but is indicated by the name Nidana itself, and because the word "etc." in "the root of the garment matter Ksudraka-vastu, etc." includes the Vinaya-matrka, etc. If the questions of the root of the difference of actions and the occasion of the Brahmin girl, etc., are included in the questions of the Brahmin girl, then the one who includes them will become unwise, because these eight are clearly not the Uttara-grantha but are included in it.
