Furthermore, if one commits an act of killing while relying on the basis of a novice monk (referring to the novice monk's vows), and it is ultimately completed while relying on the basis of a fully ordained monk (referring to the fully ordained monk's vows), it becomes a defeat (pārājika). This is because the two, a defeat and an offense similar to a defeat, have the same function except for the difference in name, so the transgression is the same, the action is the same, and both need to be remedied through confession. Similarly, even if vows are taken again later, the vows will not arise. Some say this. Then, the transgression of digging the earth and the offense of digging and damaging the earth, the two actions are the same, so the transgressions should also be the same. These two both need to be remedied with the eight dharmas, and similarly, they will obstruct the path of karma. If you say that the names and categories of transgression and offense are different, so they are not the same. Then, aren't the names and categories of defeat and offenses similar to defeat also different? Furthermore, if one commits an act of killing while relying on the basis of a fully ordained monk, it should also become a defeat if it is ultimately completed in the continuum of another fully ordained monk's precepts. Because if one commits an act of killing while relying on the basis of a novice monk, merely by the power of that action, it ultimately becomes a defeat when completed on the basis of a fully ordained monk. The sign is accepted. If you accept this, then it contradicts the statement that "faults that arise without offense are different." Furthermore, the Vinaya states: "If someone who has not taken full ordination begins to steal, and then steals because they have taken full ordination, it becomes a sthūlātyaya (saṃghāvaśeṣa)." This is unreasonable because there is no distinction of limbs in it. The sign is accepted. In the Vinaya, the first three defeats and so on, say that one begins on the former limb and completes on the latter, which is not an obstacle, because it refers to the former limb having its own action and the latter limb having an indispensable proximate action. Some say that the distinction here is the distinction of perverted intention. When a woman who wants to take full ordination is touched, does she have the mind to abandon the touch or not? If not, it will become an obstacle of lacking limbs, so the transfer of the limb of vows is unreasonable, therefore it will not become a distinction of limbs; if so, it will become a distinction of perverted intention, so it cannot become a distinction of limbs. In general, merely generating the mind to abandon what is to be abandoned is not a perverted intention to engage in sinful behavior. As the commentary on the Abhidharmakośa says, if one performs the action of the path of karma, and then generates the noble path, it will not become the path of karma, because the basis is contradictory.

Because the sutra says "also," it implies that the act of killing animals, like a collective action, shows that the path of killing animals will arise in the continuum. If each object to be abandoned requires a mind of abandonment, then it is impossible to generate vows now, because the objects to be abandoned are infinite. The refutation of this school is a refutation of divisions. Fourth, how does it transform? Regarding the four types of transgressions, there are four possibilities: action is accomplished, but ultimately not accomplished; ultimately accomplished, but action not accomplished; neither is accomplished; both are accomplished. The first is like abandoning begging and things related to begging. The second is like the remainder of a house and a large house, and abandoning making cushions. The third is like the remainder of giving and the transgression caused by listening. The fourth is like the defeat of taking life. So, what is the meaning of these? Generating a transgression without needing an indispensable action immediately before the ultimate of that transgression is action accomplished. Needing an indispensable action immediately before that is action not accomplished. Generating a transgression by the accomplishment of the ultimate by others, without relying on one's own knowledge, is ultimate accomplishment. Needing to know the accomplishment of the ultimate oneself is ultimate non-accomplishment. Thus, there are four situations. Among them, in some situations, both action and ultimate are not accomplished, such as not practicing celibacy, etc. Ultimately accomplished but action not accomplished, such as houses and large houses, etc., become inferior transgressions, because the latter division has no action, but has the activity of body and speech. Action accomplished but ultimate not accomplished, for abandoning begging and things related to begging, etc., only becomes a transgression of violation, because there is no activity of body and speech, only mental misconduct. This is pervasive. In the "Three Hundred Verses," it says, "Generating the mind is a violation." Because it is said so. Both action and ultimate are accomplished, such as killing, it becomes a root transgression, because at the time of full ordination, there is no activity of body and speech and no thought, they say.
