The root vows of the first chapter are: lying, faultfinding, a monk's divisive speech, causing regret, teaching, abandoning, unfavorable circumstances and the Dharma, showing favoritism, and adding disparagement. Thus it is. First, the downfall of telling lies is: the monk who is the basis, regarding what is stated above, the lie that becomes a defeat, and the lie that becomes a remainder, and knowingly saying what is not the Dharma as the Dharma, and saying what is not the Dharma as the Dharma, the lie that becomes a grave offense, and at the time of confession, when asked three times, "Are you completely pure in this?" and not saying anything and passing over, like this kind of lie that becomes a misdeed, and as it will be said later, other than the lies of downfall that the Sangha uses to slander with the Sangha's remainder, a knowing lie. Thought and cognition are not confused, and with the intention of wanting to speak, the action is that one speaks oneself, and ultimately the listener understands the words and meaning, then one commits a downfall. Second, the downfall of speaking of faults is: the monk who is the basis, towards the other monk who is the object, thought and cognition are not confused, with the intention of wanting to impose a fault, the action is that at that time and place, it is known as imposing a fault, whether spoken with gentle or harsh words, ultimately the other person understands the meaning, then one commits a downfall. Third, the downfall of making divisive speech is: the monk who is the basis, towards the harmonious monks who are the object, cognition is not confused, with the intention of wanting to make divisive speech, the action is that with six kinds of speech, naming names and speaking divisive words, ultimately the other person understands the meaning, then one commits a downfall. Fourth, the downfall of causing regret is: the monk who is the basis, knowing the cause of the dispute and belonging to the pacifier, towards the other monks who are the object, regarding any of the four kinds of Dharma disputes, after the Sangha has pacified it in terms of the Dharma, cognition is not confused, with the intention of wanting to stir up the dispute, the action is speaking words of regret such as "Your dispute has not been well pacified," ultimately the object understands the meaning, then one commits a downfall. Fifth, the downfall of teaching the Dharma to a laywoman is: the monk who is the basis, towards a laywoman who is not a relative, who is able to show her body, able to speak and understand, without miraculous powers and not possessing the nature of a wise person,

Sowing seeds, mocking, admonishing, Beds and cushions, and driving away, Subsequent imposition, planting for livelihood, And building in two tiers, etc. Thus it is said. First, the downfall of destroying seeds and seedlings is: The basis is a Bhikshu, not in a state of magical power or manifestation, not possessing obstacles, not at a time of accomplishing special matters. The object is seeds and seedlings, not made to be established as their own Dharma nature and not deteriorating. The thought is not mistaken, the motivation is the desire to harm. The action is destroying by oneself or others. The culmination is downfall upon destruction. Second, the downfall of mocking is: The basis is a Bhikshu, counted as inferior in actions of merely requesting. The object is the twelve types of people, whether designated or not, and also being lenient towards those designated. The thought is not mistaken, the motivation is transforming the thought with the intention to mock. The action is, in matters related to oneself, causing the object to hear, clearly mocking by mentioning their name, or not mentioning their name, but saying that some people do this, mocking in a roundabout way is also acceptable. The culmination is downfall upon understanding the meaning. The twelve types of people are: Designation for residence and food, two types; coming and going for porridge and pastries, two types; making trivial matters come and go, and two types; accomplishment of utensils and clothing, two types; hiding and covering large summer cloths; errands and decorations, these twelve types of people, are what the teacher has correctly declared. As it is said. Third, the downfall of admonishment being offensive to the ears is: The basis is a Bhikshu who does not possess the causes such as saving other lives. The object is another Bhikshu giving lawful admonishment and asking questions. The thought is not mistaken, the motivation is the intention to be offensive to the ears. The action is beginning to speak words of inverted answers. The culmination is downfall when the object understands the meaning. Fourth, the downfall of lodging is: The basis is a Bhikshu, the object is the lodging of the Sangha, after enjoying it, leaving it uncovered, not tidying it up oneself or not having others tidy it up. The thought is not mistaken, the motivation is the intention to reside or leave as one pleases. The action is leaving it in that state and then residing there or beginning to leave. The culmination is, due to that reason, the lodging becoming a mess?
