That is, in the ṭīkā, therefore, this sūtra is the method, and the teaching of morality arises from the method. The characteristics of the method and what arises from the method are related. So how is it taught? The ultimate purpose and the subject matter are actually taught, because the ultimate purpose is actually taught by the word "emergence," and the subject matter is actually taught by the word "morality." Purpose and connection are taught by implication, because it is vowed that the sūtra is composed for the purpose of teaching morality. In the ṭīkā, therefore, for what should be explained and the ultimate purpose of the purpose, the two words "morality" and "emergence" are clearly stated in order, while the connection and purpose are stated by implication, because the sūtra is composed for the purpose of teaching morality. Some are obvious, and some are through indirect means. If, relying on morality, one obtains nirvāṇa by abandoning afflictions, then it contradicts the statement that afflictions are abandoned by immaculate wisdom. If asked in this way, there is no fault, because relying on morality with the characteristics of seven abandonments, afflictions will be abandoned by immaculate wisdom. Considering this, the sūtra says: "Abiding in morality, relying on morality, one will see the four noble truths as they really are." Third, regarding the word "emergence," ངེས་པ་ (nges pa) is certainty, and the word འབྱུང་བའི་སྒྲ་ ('byung ba'i sgra) has meanings such as foot, young, and attainment, but here it only refers to attainment, because the word "certainly" is said. Therefore, what must be attained is the nirvāṇa without remainder, which is the ultimate purpose. The truth of the path and the nirvāṇa with remainder are only temporary purposes, but not the ultimate purpose, because the remainder is not what must be attained, and the path is the cause of attaining that nirvāṇa. The morality that becomes the method of attaining the nirvāṇa of emergence is the morality of emergence, that is, the morality with seven abandonments and its retinue. That is, the impure conduct of the body, not giving, and killing are the three abandonments, and the lying, slander, harsh words, and idle talk of speech are the four abandonments, which are the seven abandonments, and having a retinue refers to abandoning alcohol and so on.

The Sanskrit equivalent of "empowered" is Atha It refers to auspiciousness, then a conjunction, immediately, and empowerment. Here, it refers only to the last, meaning that from here until the completion of the entire Sutra, everything will be taught under the empowerment of the discipline of definite occurrence. This also indicates the commitment to compose. Fourthly, one might ask: It is not appropriate to compose this treatise for the sake of understanding the discipline of the seven sections along with their retinue, because the discipline of the seven sections along with their retinue has already been taught in the four divisions of the Vinaya. The answer is: There is no fault, because it is for the sake of guiding disciples who are afraid of listening to extensive texts and are unable to engage with them, and for the sake of easily understanding the meaning of the Vinaya, and because there is a need to eliminate distorted explanations of the meaning of the Vinaya. The first is easy to understand. The second is established because the Teacher explained what the Buddha taught by applying it to one basis, by applying it to many bases. For example, in the Vinaya, in the context of the first defeat, it is said, "Any monk who has not renounced his training and has not abandoned his vows, if he engages in unchaste conduct, practicing sexual intercourse, will be defeated." Here, the Teacher teaches that for the basis of engaging in the five types of offenses, it is necessary to not have renounced the training and not to have abandoned the vows. The third is established because some people say that taking back something stolen after concealing the substance is not the thought of taking back what has already been stolen, but the thought of stealing what has not been stolen. To refute this, it is said, "Whatever is honored with the thought of 'I will take it back later.'" Also, to refute some who say that just as jaggery juice that has been blessed and has its taste restored is not suitable for consumption, similarly, jaggery juice that has not been blessed and has its taste restored is not suitable for consumption, it is said, "That is not the case," and so on. Also, some say that giving is taught in the manner of insistence, in accordance with seeking the essence, because giving is to be done even if one does not want to. To refute this, the Teacher says that it is not appropriate to insist because one must request the Sangha, saying, "That is not good," and so on. Thus, in the commentary, the purpose here is to teach discipline.
