Those who are expelled and then sent back will be liberated by the power of the reinstatement. Some say that even if further coercion is applied to a person who has been expelled, they can still be liberated, but this is unreasonable because expulsion is the end of punishment, and no second coercion can be applied on top of that. Third, the way to ask for forgiveness incidentally has two aspects: necessity and summary. The first aspect is that the actor is liberated from punishment and is able to gather the Buddha's teachings himself. The second aspect has three points: from where, by what means, and by what ritual is forgiveness sought. First: it must be someone who has abandoned wrong views and has the right thoughts, because it says "rebuke" etc. It must be someone who has abandoned the wrong support and relies on the right support, because it says "the monks of the Lama" etc. It must be someone who has the signs of a renunciant and does not have the signs of a householder, because it says not to rely on the banners of householders and heretics. It must be someone who abandons what should be abandoned and takes what should be taken, because it says not to do what is not in accordance with the Dharma and not to study the monastic vows. It must be a humble attitude, because it says "hair standing on end" etc. It must be someone who has abandoned pride and boasting, because it says "slandering the Sangha". It must be someone who engages in body, speech, and mind with reverence, because it says "showing similarity". It must be someone who turns away from the cause of coercion, because it says "freed from the cause". It must be someone who prays three times, because it says "ask for forgiveness". It must not be a collective act, because it says "not by the Sangha". There must be coercion, because without it, it becomes groundless. Second, by what means is forgiveness accepted? It must be the Sangha that has the necessary conditions for accepting forgiveness and is complete in number, suitable for supplementation, free from two inconsistencies, and is accepted by the Sangha that performs the coercion or by the Bhikshu appointed by it. Third, the way to accept it by which ritual is: the preliminary, the main part, and the subsequent part are performed in sequence, praying three times, performing the four karmas, and stating skillful means. Second is voluntary.

Regarding the method of rectification through confession and other means, there are two points: necessity and summary. The first point is: sins are purified. If one speaks of name and lineage, one can be liberated from sins. The Pratimoksha Sutra also says that confessing leads to dwelling in happiness. The Five Books state that confessing and repenting can obtain the ten benefits of guarding the precepts, and also experience the happiness of higher realms and definite goodness. Therefore, in some ways of purification, the essence of sins cannot be purified by rectification, because it is to be abandoned by meditation. The scriptures say that even if sins are rectified by verbal recitation, beings like stonemasons will be born in hell. The scriptures say that even if rectified by verbal recitation, one will be born as an ox for five hundred lifetimes. Rectification is not without purpose, as it has the purpose of stopping increase. This statement is also unreasonable, as it is not reasonable to rectify merely to stop the increase of sins, because confession can also stop the increase. Therefore, sins are purified by rectifying sins, because if one does not rectify, one will be born in lower realms. If one rectifies, one will be born in higher realms. Some also believe that by rectifying sins, the manifested actions are purified together, but the habitual seeds are not purified together. The Five Books say, "This is the medicine to eliminate the harmful." Here, "harmful" refers to sins, which are like snakes, and the medicine to eliminate them is complete awakening, which is to eliminate all annihilation. Some also believe that sins that are of the same nature as non-definitely experienced karma are purified together with the manifested actions; while sins that are of the same nature as definitely experienced karma only suppress the manifestation, but are not completely purified. Otherwise, if the heavy sin of drawing blood from the Tathagata with malice can be purified by rectification, then its immediate karma should also be purified. This statement is also unreasonable, because the nature of sins and offenses is not the same. If rectification as described in the scriptures does not necessarily purify sins, then one cannot trust the scriptures.
