The fundamental summary is: Impure Uposatha Bhikshus, destroyed by Maudgalyayana, then rebuked by the Teacher, and the Sangha abandoned the Uposatha. This verse of summary extensively expounds the Uposatha Sutra in the country of Champa. This Uposatha Sutra also comes from the 'Righteous Conduct Chapter' of the Middle Length Discourses. These are the quoted contents. Because this Vinaya discusses transgressions, chapter divisions must be added; if not divided, one cannot speak. Instructions must be established, Uposatha must be established, prohibitions must be established, Uposatha must be established, and prohibitions must be established. To extensively demonstrate whether it conforms to the Dharma or not, it is named from one aspect as 'Establishing the Root of Uposatha.' The meaning of words such as the root of dwelling is easy to understand. Second, the reason why these are called 'roots' is that the Sanskrit word for 'root' is "वस्तु (vastu)", although it is said to have five meanings, here, because it is the support of this and that, it is called 'root.' Because the content expressed is shown by it, the expresser is also established as 'root.' The Root Commentary says: 'Root is the support, it is the scripture that clearly shows becoming the support of its ordination, etc., and is called the root of ordination, etc.' Third, this Sutra, for those who seek liberation, needs the higher training in morality that remains as the root of Nirvana. The three methods of receiving it, protecting it, and remedying it when damaged have already been explained. Fourth, explaining this meaning is for the sake of accomplishing that purpose. Fifth, most of it is the order explained in the Vinaya. Summer retreat and prohibition are the order of cause and effect. Clothes and medicine, clothes are the main part of the requisites, while medicine is not the main part. There are three roots of clothing, such as hardness, stretching, and material. Prohibition and permission are related to time, so they are explained first. The two are also like generally explaining clothes, while leather is special. The root of action is necessary for everything, so it is explained in the middle. The three roots of dispute have similar content expressed, so they are explained together, while the content expressed by the wheel of fortune is less, so it is explained before the root of dispute. Dwelling is the support of all actions, so it is explained last. Second, the individual meanings.

There are five: namely, studying the precepts, relying on the conditions for a comfortable dwelling, the method of acting, healing illnesses, and the basis for all of these. The first has three: studying the precepts through the gate of posadha, the gate of the rains retreat, and the gate of lifting restrictions. The first has two: the posadha of calming and the harmonious posadha. As it is said in the Karma Shatam: "Posadha is that which increases and trains the three precepts, and there are two types: the harmonious posadha and the calming posadha." The calming posadha has five: the place where it is practiced, the basis on which it is practiced, the object of practice, the manner of practice, and the necessity of practicing in this way. First, there is no harm from people traveling during the day, and at night there is no noise, wild animals, thieves, etc., and it has abundant resources that are free from wrong livelihood and are in harmony with yoga. Second, one who possesses pure morality and has trained the mind through hearing and contemplating the Tripitaka, possesses both physical seclusion from busyness and mental seclusion from conceptualization, is content with little, is satisfied, and seeks liberation as the goal. As it is said in the Treasury of Knowledge: "One who possesses morality, dwells in hearing, and possesses thought, should diligently apply himself to meditation." Third, there are the two, calming and insight. First, one must practice calming, because insight that possesses calming is more powerful in abandoning afflictions. With this in mind, it is said in the Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life: "By the power of insight that possesses perfect calming, one knows that all afflictions are completely destroyed, therefore one should first seek calming, which is accomplished only by those who are free from attachment to the world." There are two ways to meditate on calming: for a person with strong attachment, practice ugliness meditation, and for a person with strong conceptualization, practice the method of meditating on exhaling and inhaling, both of which are explained in the Treasury of Knowledge. And each of these should be practiced through the nine methods of abiding the mind, and at the time of the ninth abiding of the mind, as it is said in the Ornament of the Sutras, one should acknowledge that one has obtained the characteristic of calming, in which a special bliss of extreme pliancy of body and mind arises.
