It is like "arguing over land." In order to do so, honesty is not refutation, and the cunning gather in the absence of courage, so they are not the same. After admitting one's own faults, mentioning the faults of others in passing is wanting to admit, for example, "You are a thief because you are a man," to which the other party says, "You too," like that. This is unreasonable, because at that time, if one knows or does not know the seemingly valid reason, then if one knows in sequence, there is no fault, because if one becomes a thief because one is a man, then you will also become a thief, because it shows an uncertain reason. If it is uncertain, then it is a refutation that does not state the fault. Not refuting the obtained refutation is abandoning the transgressive examination. This is also because the two debaters do not understand how to refute faulty speech, so they gather in the absence of courage. Applying refutation where it is not a place for refutation is applying a subsequent application where there is no subsequent application. This is also because when the debater speaks correctly, the opponent speaks of a fault that seems like a fault, gathering in the absence of courage, so it is not different from that. If the opponent speaks of a correct fault, and the debater fabricates it as if it were a fault and refutes it, then it amounts to stating a seemingly valid reason, so there is no separate refutation. After admitting the tenet, the words that come along incidentally because of uncertainty are a downfall of the tenet. This is unreasonable, because it is also a refutation that does not state the limb of proof, and it is not a refutation because words come along incidentally because of uncertainty. Stating a seemingly valid reason is considered a place for refutation, for example, when the opponent states a reversal. What is a reversal? There are twenty-four types from the reversal of the same meeting and non-meeting to the reversal of the same past time. If meeting and non-meeting are separated, there are twenty-five types each, but because they are summarized into one. Apply "the same reversal" one by one. Among them, the first fourteen are explained in the Compendium, and the latter ten are explained in the Examination of Reasoning. These Dharmakirti divided them into two, but Dharmakirti did not write a refuting work, but adopted a neutral attitude, because Dharmakirti had already refuted them, and if those reversals were elaborated, they would be few, and if they were abbreviated, they would be many, because of this concern.

It is explained in the commentary on the classification of arguments, and I have not written it here for fear of verbose writing. The self-commentary says: The need for clear and detailed explanation is: If these key points are not known, etc., are the intermediate verses. Third, regarding the classification of speech, it is classified from the perspective of person, necessity, and mode of expression. First, there are six modes of expression for three types of people: For the proponent, there are two statements of fact and refutations of errors; for the opponent, there are two statements of asking for agreement and pointing out errors; for the witness, there are two statements of following and distinguishing. Second, there are statements of establishment and refutation. The first is divided into correct and seemingly correct. The first has three aspects: definition, mode of stating, and function of speech. The first is: Demonstrating the three modes is the speech of establishment, which has already been said. Second, there are three: negation, affirmation, and abandonment. First, refuting the views of the ancients and the views of the Land of Snows. First, for the Samkhyas and others, some places have fire because there is smoke, like a kitchen. Some people think that because there is smoke, there is fire, so combining the five members is unreasonable, because the three expressions of promise, reason, and conclusion are superfluous in the five members, and this is a lengthy statement because the general statement is incomplete. Second, some Tibetans think that even for a two-membered argument, one should say "because some places have smoke," or "sound is also produced," using the third case; some say "because some places have smoke," or "sound is also produced," using the fifth case. This is unreasonable, because if combined in this way, the incomplete argument will lead to a promise, and it must be said "because there is smoke, there is fire," "because it is produced, it is impermanent." If it is thought that even if the third and fifth cases are used, it is not necessary to state the promise, because at that time the promise is understood by implication, then even if it is understood by implication, if the promise is not stated, then the power of that argument is incomplete. One must ask back, "What is the smoke? What is produced?" to inquire into its intention. If the proponent's argument is incomplete and the opponent's argument intervenes, then this is the speaker's fault, as stated in the rules of debate. The second is divided into two, the first is the method of applying it to those who are not skilled, for the foolish proponent who does not remember the three modes,
