Among the two, when refuting the views of others, some, like Chatsang, assert that the establishment of a stable basis is achieved through direct perception itself. That is, the beginning and end of wisdom are both negated by self-awareness. Because the wisdom in the middle is established by self-awareness, the continuum of wisdom is established as beginningless and endless. In one's own continuum, through self-awareness, it is established that mere wisdom arises from prior wisdom. Therefore, when mere wisdom that did not arise prior to the prior wisdom is directly negated, the distinctions of wisdom that did not arise prior to the prior wisdom are also negated accordingly. For example, just as the mere smoke arising from fire is established through direct perception, the distinctions of smoke that did not arise prior to the fire are negated accordingly. Furthermore, in one's own continuum, through self-awareness, it is established that mere wisdom generates subsequent wisdom. Therefore, when mere wisdom that does not generate subsequent wisdom is directly negated, the distinctions of wisdom that do not generate subsequent wisdom are also negated accordingly. For example, just as the mere lamp is established to emit light, all distinctions of lamps that do not emit light are negated accordingly. It is not reasonable to say this, because although self-awareness establishes that the present mere consciousness is related, it cannot establish the beginningless and endless nature of birth and death. Like the Charvakas, they believe that the initial mind does not arise from the mind of the next life but from the body of the parents, thus doubting other causes. Moreover, they doubt that the dying mind does not generate the subsequent mind but rather ceases the continuum like a extinguished fire. If mere consciousness is now established as cause and effect, then it should necessarily determine past and future lives, otherwise, it would be absurd to not have wrong conceptions such as nihilistic views. Moreover, fire and lamp cannot be used as examples, because it is necessary to use the initial smoke arising from smoke as an example. The initial smoke arising from fire of a different kind would become an example of the newly born mind arising from the body. Furthermore, it is necessary to use a lamp with exhausted oil generating another lamp as an example, while the lamp having the characteristic of emitting light can serve as an example of the mind having clarity, but it cannot serve as an example of generating the next life. Second, regarding one's own view, it is to establish that the past and future are beginningless and endless. First, among these two, from the perspective of establishing the thesis, relying on the reason that the immediate cause is mind and does not depend on other causes, it can be established that the beginning and end of wisdom are beginningless and endless. How is it established?

Now, the mind of a newborn is a dharma, because its immediate cause is the preceding mind, being merely awareness, just like the present awareness, this is the sign of the result. Second, in establishing the reason, the property of the subject is established by experience or sign, and the pervasion is established by detailed analysis, as explained in the commentary. Second, there are also two aspects to establishing the future: establishing the endless clarity with and without self-grasping. First, stating the sign, establishing the reason. The first is: the mind at the time of death is a dharma, it will definitely produce the subsequent mind, because its causes and conditions are complete and there are no obstacles, just like the sprout of the last seed, with this sign the endlessness of the later end of awareness is established. Second, there are two aspects: establishing the property of the subject and the pervasion. The first also has two aspects, the first, the actual cause of birth being complete is self-grasping, and the obstacle is selflessness, and the absence of it is the realization of selflessness. Second, in order to determine this, it is necessary to understand the entry and return of samsara, therefore there are three aspects: negation, affirmation, and abandonment. The first is: the naked ascetics say that in order to abandon karma and body, it is necessary to practice asceticism, because not only the mind, but also karma and body are the cause of samsara, and harming either of the two will also prevent rebirth, just as if there is a seed but the water and fertilizer are insufficient, the sprout will not grow. Therefore, they say that even if karma is exhausted through asceticism, there will be no rebirth. So, the asceticism of exhausting karma and body is not the path, because karma is infinite and cannot be abandoned, and the antidote cannot be known, and if craving arising from ignorance is not abandoned, then even if karma and body are abandoned earlier, they will arise later, so it is not beneficial, and if self-grasping is abandoned, then even if karma and body are not abandoned, like a fire with exhausted firewood, one will not take rebirth again, so it is not necessary. Second, in one's own system, identifying the cause of rebirth in samsara, examining its antidote. First, in general, the cause of merely rebirth, in particular, the cause of the arising of sense consciousness. The first is: the cause of rebirth in samsara is the ignorance of grasping at self, i.e., the view of the perishable aggregate, if it exists, other things grasping at self will arise, and from that also arise attachment and aversion, and these afflictions accumulate karma, from virtuous karma arise the three higher realms of samsara, and from non-virtuous karma arise the lower realms.
