If the five senses arise, does one person become multiple continuums? Answer: Because the objects are different, mental direct perception of external objects can arise simultaneously in one continuum, but there is no second fault. Because at that time, in that person's continuum, above the consciousness of mind, for internal objects, there is only one continuum of self-awareness. For example, although there are multiple sense consciousnesses, they do not become multiple continuums. Second, is it a valid cognition or not? Answer: Because there is no confusion about the true meaning, it is a valid cognition. However, because there is no continuum, it cannot, like other inferences, generate certainty by its own power. Therefore, it has not obtained the name of "valid cognition" caused by certainty generated by its own power. For example, although the object of sense consciousness is atoms, because they do not appear there, they are not regarded as objects in the subsequent stage. If you ask, why can or cannot sense consciousness and mind consciousness generate certainty from themselves based on the presence or absence of a continuum? Answer: Because the co-emergent condition of sense consciousness is the proximate cause of the previous colored sense organ separated from matter, from which the subsequent colored sense organ arises. Therefore, sense consciousness has a continuum. However, the co-emergent condition of mental direct perception is not the proximate cause of the previous mind sense separated from matter, from which the subsequent mind sense arises. Therefore, mental direct perception does not have a continuum. It is pervasive: the continuum of the co-emergent condition of mental direct perception is only the continuum of sense direct perception. The subject property of the former is established, because the two subsequent causes of mental direct perception are the same substance. This is the good explanation of Yongzin Rinpoche. In short, sense direct perception arises from the previous proximate cause, and mental direct perception is the opposite of this, which is the meaning of having or not having a continuum. Third, it is divided into two types: determining the mode of arising and calculating the mode of operation of direct perception. First, after the continuum of sense direct perception ends, does one mental direct perception arise, or do they arise alternately? Answer: The Ornament Maker (name to be determined) said that sense direct perception and mental direct perception arise alternately, starting with the grasping of sense direct perception and ending with the dulling of mental direct perception. Dharmottara believes that only one mental direct perception arises at the end of the continuum of sense direct perception. Both views have obstacles. If according to the first view, then the difference between the two in the difficulty of determination is unreasonable. Second

This is unreasonable because there is no difference in the aggregation of the three conditions for mental direct perception at the beginning and end of sense direct perception. Since both of these views are unreasonable, the first moment of sense consciousness can arise unimpeded. It is both the co-emergent and the immediately preceding cause of the second moment of sense consciousness and the first moment of mental direct perception. It also becomes the cooperative condition of mental direct perception. Therefore, apart from sense direct perception, as a separate entity, the first moment of mental direct perception arises simultaneously with sense direct perception. In this way, even if multiple direct perceptions arise simultaneously in one continuum, there will be no fault of that person becoming many other different continuums. Because at that time, there is only one continuum of mental consciousness in that person's continuum, so the experiencer, self-awareness, also has only one continuum. This shows that even if multiple direct perceptions arise simultaneously in one continuum, it will not become multiple continuums, while the former (view) is that even if multiple mental direct perceptions arise simultaneously in one continuum, it will not become the fault of multiple continuums. From then on, until the continuum of sense direct perception is exhausted, it will not arise alternately, but will arise separately. Therefore, the existence or non-existence of these two continuums can be determined or uncertain, so there is no fault in terms of continuum. Since it is possible to arise in equal numbers simultaneously, it is freed from the fault of Dharma excellence. Second, therefore, looking outward, there are two object-cognizing direct perceptions, and looking inward, there is one self-awareness, which is called the third way. Only Shankarānanda's view is reasonable. When the enabling condition, the function of sense faculty, diminishes and the objective condition continues to exist, one moment of mental direct perception can arise unimpeded, because the aggregation of the three conditions is possible. Otherwise, it is difficult to explain the simultaneous arising of equal numbers. This is the pure and undefiled oral tradition of the venerable lama. Third is the refutation of the debate: The one whose ears are not pierced says, if the sense faculty has already grasped, grasping again will become interrupted cognition, and if it grasps without having grasped, it will become the blind seeing. Answer: Since what is grasped is not the object of sense consciousness, it will not become interrupted cognition, and because the direct perception of sense faculty depends on the sense faculty as the immediate cause, the blind and others cannot see, so mental direct perception is valid, and neither of these two faults exist. Regarding this, (it is) also said: "Therefore, the consciousness of sense faculty..." etc.
