For the Yoga direct perception, neither of the two kinds of noble ones without conceptualization are. The Yoga direct perception and inference with conceptualization are definitely from their own power as both non-deceptive and knowledge. If they rely on others, they will fall into the fault of endless determiners. The initial direct perception and the untrusted, and those bound by the causes of illusion, are determined by the power of later valid cognitions. If they were determined by themselves, the later ones would become meaningless. There are three of these later ones, and their examples are clear in the commentary. The valid cognition that determines it is also, when the appearance of fire appears and there is doubt about its truth or falsehood, seeing the function of cooking, etc., and determining it as fire. Or, even if the function is not seen, but it arises in between, clearly grasping the appearance of the object, is a habitual direct perceiver. Or, from the sign of seeing smoke arising, inferring the existence of fire, or from the sign of other substances from the place of origin, such as the smell of fire, inferring the fire, it is determined. This is the supreme intention of glorious Dharmakirti. In the Pramāṇavārttika, it says: "From itself, it understands its own nature." The "self" here refers to the examples of self-determination mentioned earlier. The nature of self is both non-deceptive and knowledge. The understanding that leads to determination is also from the perspective of determination. Otherwise, if "from self" is determined to be only self-awareness direct perception, then this would be the same, and the self-object of inference would fall into uncertainty. The "nature of self" is also not determined to be only the meaning of knowledge, because if it were, then non-deception would become not the nature. Because the two are distinguished as to whether they are the nature or not. "From convention is valid cognition itself." The convention here is the later arising determiner, but not merely the determining consciousness. Otherwise, this would fall into being only the determining consciousness. "Valid cognition" refers to the opposite of valid cognition, non-deceptive knowledge. "Itself" is a word that excludes others. Therefore, the direct teaching of the first two lines of both the Pramāṇavārttika and this is only self-determination, and the main content taught by the latter two lines is other-determination, and whether or not there is self-determination in the mere teaching. Because the valid cognition of the determiner is directly shown. May this teaching benefit immeasurable sentient beings. The third is, the

Some, such as bottles and ice, are the two valid cognitions of what is to be ascertained and what can ascertain, are they in the same place or different places? If in the same place, then the second valid cognition that can ascertain will become a cutting knowledge. If in different places, then it becomes an object of another place, so how does the other become an object? Those valid cognitions that want to ascertain the other, do they cut off or not cut off the superimposition? If like the former, it will become self-cognition. If like the latter, because it is not a valid cognition, it is not reasonable to ascertain the other, so from the perspective of the entity, it is said that it is impossible for the valid cognition of ascertaining the other. This is unreasonable, because for them, manifest cognition only becomes a valid cognition by being free from conceptualization and non-erroneous. Therefore, if one does not understand the distinction that if one immediately leads to certainty by one's own power, it is self-cognition, and if one cannot do it and must be ascertained by others, it is other-cognition, like the heretics, mixing the functions of manifest cognition and conceptualization, thinking that manifest cognition itself is the nature of certainty, and ultimately only cutting off. Fourth, regarding how it performs refutation and establishment, it is the general classification of refutation and establishment, and the determination of its nature. The first point is that there is actually no refutation and establishment on appearance, because manifest cognition is the object of things, and does not perform refutation and establishment except for observing things themselves. Therefore, for negation, there can be both refutation and establishment, because the certainty led by manifest cognition with negation as its object and inference can perform refutation and establishment. So, here the establishment of direct display is the establishment of negation, that is, the self-characteristic of appearance. The second point includes two aspects: definition and the way it understands things. The first point is that the definition of negation is to understand with the mind only as eliminating the dissimilar. The definition of establishment is to understand with the mind as completely eliminating the dissimilar. Negation can be divided into non-affirming negation and affirming negation, and their definitions are respectively distinguished by the way of establishing non-abandonment, that is, not discarding, and not abandoning, that is, discarding, after the object to be negated is blocked. The second point is divided into three points, the first point is to refute other views, such as some people like Phywa pa believe that the definitions of direct understanding and indirect understanding are respectively cutting off superimposition by manifesting the image of the thing itself, and cutting off superimposition by manifesting the image of the other. The way to establish through this method is that when one directly recognizes that there is fire on the mountain through inference, one can indirectly recognize that there is heat of fire in oneself, and refute the fabrication on permanence.
