If, from the sign of the light of a jewel, there arises a definite understanding of a jewel in that place, then inference is possible, as will be explained below. As for the other two, the way in which the sign of the result is established is explained in the commentary. Furthermore, some translators and others say that the eye consciousnesses that grasp the colors of conch shells, fire, water, and so on are, respectively, direct valid cognition with respect to the tactile sensations of smoothness, heat, and wetness. This is not reasonable, because the five sense consciousnesses do not distinguish the individual functions of the five external sense bases, and by applying one to the object of another, the other sense organs would become meaningless. Moreover, understanding tactile sensations from the sign of color is a confusion of direct perception with the consciousness that relies on the sign of the result of inference. Secondly, there are two ways to refute mistaken conceptions about inference: refuting the conception of something that exists as not existing, and refuting the conception of something that does not exist as existing. The first is that when one mistakenly conceives of a vase behind a door as a vase inside a room, the eye consciousness that grasps the vase behind the door; when one mistakenly conceives of a creature in the morning as a creature in the evening, the sense consciousness that grasps the creature in the evening; and when one mistakenly conceives of the red of coarse cloth as the red of a vase, the sense consciousness that grasps the red of coarse cloth—these three mistaken conceptions prevent it from being direct valid cognition. It is unreasonable to say that the appearance of a conch shell as yellow is valid cognition with respect to its shape, because at that time, conception is mistaken with respect to the object, time, and aspect, and is therefore a false consciousness. However, that does not obscure the fact that the three sense consciousnesses are valid cognition, because those three sense consciousnesses are valid cognition with respect to the self-characterized object. For example, even though there is the imputation of permanence with respect to a vase, the sense consciousness that apprehends it initially is still valid cognition. Thirdly, some say that if the sense consciousness that grasps the red of coarse cloth is valid cognition with respect to red when one mistakenly conceives of the red of coarse cloth as the red of a vase, then there is no fault in the mistaken conception of a conch shell as yellow not being valid cognition with respect to its shape, because the two are the same. They are not the same, because it has already been explained that the sense consciousness that grasps the yellow conch shell cannot reasonably be valid cognition with respect to its shape, whereas in the other case, the object of the mistaken conception and the object that the sense consciousness is valid cognition with respect to are different. Secondly, there are two ways to refute mistaken conceptions about inference: refuting the conception of something that exists as not existing, and refuting the conception of something that does not exist as existing. The first is that some say that from the sign of the light of a jewel, in some place, one understands the jewel itself.

Thinking is not speculation; if a jewel is set as a sign, then the sign and the signified do not exist, and the radiance of the jewel will not be established. If it is said that merely the radiance is uncertain, then using the sign of a rice sprout to infer the rice seed, etc., most consequential signs will be mistaken, because if the rice seed is set, the sign and the signified do not exist, etc., are the same. Second, inferring the constant fire on a mountain from smoke, the mountain with branches is the subject, it has constant fire because there is truly meaningful smoke. If it is set like the many created by Ishvara, even if there is confusion about the merely stated sign and what is to be established, the meaning of wanting only fire on the mountain is what is to be established and part of what is merely stated, so it is said to apply valid cognition to that. Such a sign does not possess the three aspects, because such a thing is impossible. Even if it is set up in that way, if it is said that to the extent possible it is impermanent fire, merely smoke, that is not right, even if establishing only fire on the mountain with only smoke that has accomplished the three aspects, the difference in the dharma of the mountain, constant and the mountain with branches, the difference in the sign, true meaning, etc., are not established. If it is said that only fire and only smoke are established, that is not right; for someone who wants a wooden staff, what is the use of establishing only a person? Third, explaining the definition that determines the entity on the basis, divided into two. First, posing the question: The valid cognitions previously explained, those that are non-deceptive knowledge, from what are they understood and determined, from themselves or from other later valid cognitions? If according to the former, because there is no inconsistency in the definition of valid cognition, explaining the definition in the treatise becomes meaningless; if according to the latter, it will become infinite. Second, the answer is divided into three: refuting others' answers, one's own answer, and eliminating disputes about it. First, some, such as ice crystals, think that they are determined only from themselves; some Brahmins, etc., say that they are determined only from others. It is unreasonable, because both of those have the fault of abandoning the reasoning of the power of things and the views of rationalists. The first point is established: if according to the former, later valid cognition is meaningless; if according to the latter, the determiner will become infinite. The second point is established, because it is said: "From oneself, know one's own nature." Second, having functional appearance and habituation, namely the two, object and consciousness, and the self-awareness direct perception of the continuum included in the universally conventional valid cognition, and
