Because it is considered to measure from the aspect of a weak self-nature, therefore it is only said to be self and common, that is, it is said, "That is the self-nature of self and other." Second, if someone says that, like some people think, the common characteristic and the hair shadows that are not apparent are the same in that they are not objects, but because of the way the mind enters, the common characteristic is established as the second energy to be measured, then the non-appearance is also the same as the third energy to be measured, which is not the same, because the hair shadows and other non-appearances have no required function for the object, so it is not an object, and although the common characteristic is not the real object to enter, it enters into it due to confusion, and obtains the object to enter, so it is established as an object. The first point is established, because the object is not in the thing, and there is no attachment to the object, and even if it is attached, it does not meet the meaning. If it meets, then it must be the third of the measure of measurement, but in reality it does not exist. So, hair shadows and the like cannot function, so it is not a self-characteristic, because it is not grasped by the discriminating mind, so it is not a common characteristic, so where does it belong? When the root consciousness is confused, it appears as hair shadows and two moons, etc., this is the subject, it is a self-characteristic, because it is the aspect of the root consciousness. Among them, the appearing hair shadows are the subject, and it is not established in the meaning of measurement, because there is no meaning of measurement such as desire. If the discriminating mind examines whether the hair shadows exist or do not exist, then the object of the discriminating mind is the subject, it is a common characteristic, because it is a dharma that cannot function. That is also "hair shadows and the like are not meaning," etc., and "hair shadows and the like are not common characteristics," etc., and "those are also such things," etc. Third, if someone says that the non-real common characteristic and the non-appearance are not the objects taken by the two consciousnesses, because the two consciousnesses are established from the power of the self-awareness of experience. Then, the appearance of the common characteristic and the appearance of non-appearance that appear in the two confused consciousnesses of discriminating mind and non-discriminating mind are the subject, you are not the object to be taken, because if you do that, you will be harmed by the correct measure. The aspects of the mind of the appearance of the common characteristic and the hair shadows are the subject, it is consciousness, because the self-awareness of experiencing the two confused consciousnesses is experienced separately. Those two consciousnesses are also the subject, it is a confused consciousness, because it is the consciousness that grasps that its object to be taken does not exist. That is also "even if the object exists, it is not known," etc., and "if the common characteristic is the self-nature of consciousness

etc. Fourth, it is contradictory for something like a non-existent universal to be the object of measurement for valid cognition, because a universal that is not a self-characterized entity does not exist as an object of apprehension in conceptualization. If one asks: Is it contradictory for a non-existent entity to be an object of measurement? The answer is: It is not contradictory. Because when establishing something like impermanence on the basis of negating the object to be negated, on each of the individual phenomena, one establishes that it exists in the destructible object at the time of establishment; and at the time of negation, one negates that it does not exist in that object. As it says in the Pramāṇavārttika: "Those who do not deny sound and meaning..." etc., two verses. Regarding these four debates, if one does not know how to raise a debate and says things like "If one only ascertains the object of apprehension as being solely self-characterized," then one is using the words of the established tenets of one's own system as a basis for confusion, and is merely reciting the words "refuting the debate by saying that there is no object for confused consciousness." Second, refuting the debate on the self-characterized object of apprehension, there are two parts: the debate and the response. The first part is: Not only is there no object for confused consciousness, but it is also unreasonable to assert that the object of measurement of the object of apprehension is solely self-characterized. Because there are two types of self-characterized entities, the external, material object of apprehension has been refuted by the great scholars Dignāga and Dharmakīrti. The internal object of apprehension of consciousness is impossible to distinguish in this context, because the subject is self-aware in relation to the object. Therefore, some say the word "external" in this way. The second part is to generally examine the tenets of different schools. This is divided into: refuting the establishment of other schools, and establishing the system of the Sugata. The first part is: The various schools, both our own and others, acknowledge that there are many different tenets. For example, the Materialists say that all the world arises from nature; the Īśvara school says that it is created by Īśvara; the Sāṃkhya school says that it is created by Prakṛti; the Vaiśeṣika and Śrāvakā schools say that it is created by atoms; the Cittamatra school says that it is created by consciousness; and the Madhyamaka school says that the ultimate truth is dependent origination free from elaboration. Although they follow the assertion of real entities in conventional truth, in conventional truth, one can definitely distinguish between object and consciousness in all terminology. This text has shown that in the conventional truth, the Cittamatra school also acknowledges external objects. Its meaning is that, in the presence of the root consciousness that apprehends blue, just as there is blue, in the measure of conventional terminology, conventional
